bass in a vert?

Is it worth the effort to put subwoofers in a 90 convertible? I have been told NO because of the amount of power needed and the size of most boxes will eat up so much of the trunk and all bass will be lost with the top down

and Yes, just fire them down and it will be fine


Any suggestions / tips?

I have mine in a box in the trunk. The box takes of the spare wheel well and all the way to the top of the trunk, my amp takes up the left side.

With the top down, there is a definite loss of bass, but I am still glad I put it in there. I am only running a single 12" though.

Also, I am not stereo literate so there are probably far more efficient and effective ways to do this with better results.

if you put 1 15" sub in a single, or 2 12" subs in a compression box, it wont take up that much space.. just dont buy a box... your gonna need a bigger alt, tho... anything over 500 watts you'll prolly fry your alt / battery... top up or down, with a compression box there wont be a differance..

you dont need a 15 or even 2 12's to get the bass you want. 2 10''s, or 1 good 12'' firing rearward (cuz its a vert) powered correctly will make plenty. I've been out of the whole car audio bit for about 2 years now so i dont have as much knowledge of the new stuff (most of it's crap).

and i agree you should do the 3g alt. upgrade. I was running roughly 800+ watts RMS and the light would dim at night with the 2g, and dont think of using those two with wipers or HVAC system. right now i have about 1200 watts RMS with 2 older MTX 8000's (MTX's old stuff ROCKs), 2 4250D amps powering those for my sub set-up

im not a big rap fan... bass just makes everything sound like its live in concert... i used to be into rap but now its crap... ever listen to country with 1500 watts in your trunk??? sounds like kenny chesnuts is you back seat...

I listen to metal and one 12" is way overboard in my Stang. I have to turn it way down or it drowns out the rest of the system. You could get a great sound with just an 8" subwoofer, and hide it and no one will ever see it. Me, I went for 'show' as much as I went for sound, so a 12" was the best idea for me.

Is your sub in any kind of a box or is it just attached to that panel and open behind it? Love the way it looks BTW.

Thanks It's a custom box that basically is fits the shape of the space left under that top panel. The panel you see if just a faceplate that affixes onto the box to clean it all up.

On the other side, the amp rack is an angled setup with a stand in the back to hold it in place, then another faceplate. The piece in between is separate and fits into the open hole between the two setups, and then the backing plate it a curved wood piece to finish it all off (talk about a pain in the ass!)

All i listen to is country ya jackass...and rock. It's not about being a thug, that's why i dont have 3 15's with a gazillion watts. It's about having a full sound to your system, if you had a NICE sounding sub you would understand.

in my former vert I have one 1 15 inch solo baric #1500 watts hooked up to a rockfordfosgate #700 watts in a custom small box in the wheel well....sounded allright...would have beendeeper bass if the box were bigger. I installed 6x9's in the rear console and 4.5 speakers in the dash and 6.5 speakers in the doors...sounded nice...the high's were crystal clear the mids were real nice for vocals and the bass...well could have been better but still it was bumping. I had a stock alternator, voltage went way down at idle...but shot right up after reving it into first gear. I would invest good money into your headunit. then your dash, door and rearconsole speakers. I would not buy junk, only name brand stuff.

I'm running two 10'' rockford subs w/950 watt amp. Have noticed a loss of power yet and sounds great.

I have a good headunit and have already replaced the dash, doors, and rear with quality speakers running off a decent amp. I am basically just hoping to round out the sound, but I have been told by some that with the top down I would hear/feel none of the bass. If this is the case, I would rather spend the cash elsewhere on teh car. If I do it, I am leaning toward one 10 or one 12 in a small box.

well of course if you just add a sub and amp it will sound like crap, you need aftermarket speakers and a four channel amp for them. Then the sub doesnt drown it out and you get way more mids and highs. I work installing car audio and i would recommend 1 good 12, all new speakers, and a 4 channel powering them. You wont believe the difference if you do that.

you really dont need a 4 channel amp for the aftermarket speakers, unless of course you don't know what ur doing and buy a POS headunit.

Obviously the stock speakers suck...and need replacing

I have infinity reference 5x7's in the rear and 3.5's playing off an alpine deck and its LOUD with my sub set-up. Of course no nearly as loud as my buddies set-up who have roughyl 2500 in his camaro, mine is almost as loud and i have roughly 750.

Yes and no.I got a good head unit to optomize tweeking the sound I wanted not power.I like a lot of volume to drown out the wind noise.I just bypassed the headunit's power and use separate 2 channel amps for the front and rear running 5.25" Alpine type R's and obviously a good sub amp which run two 10's.It is amazing how much clean volume I get out of those little Type R's.In the end,it all has to work together.No point in getting separate amps and good speakers if you are going to run a small sub system with the top down.It is only as good as the weakest link.I have alot of extra audio parts in my garage from not doing it right the first time.
