There has been about 15 or so post in the past week or so that have been started by unhappy 4.10 users. That makes me very uneasy because I am going in tomarrow. It is going to cost me about a grand after programmer and everything installed. For that same price I can do a nitrous kit. I have been Hell bent on getting the gears, but now I don't know. Are the people who just got them still learning how to drive um or do you always have to have DR's for them to pick up good. I am really just looking for SOTP I'm not a drag racer but I like to throw my head back when I punch it. HELP ME UNDERSTAND

first of all what shop is charging you that much? unless they are installing a chip, gears and tuning it, then 1 grand is waayyyyy too much! you should spend no more thne 500 bucks for parts and labor for gears, and the speedcal is something you can do yourself.

regarding your question, I got 3:73's, i think as time has gone by, people hype up gears way to much, they really do wake your car up and are good for a .2-.3 improvement in the 1/4 mile. BUT when people on here start saying stuff like "4:10's or 4:30's" are the way to go! my car pulls like a raped ape now!" then when people go get gears thinking it's gonna make their car pull so much harder, then they are dissapointed because people hype about mods too much. I say get them, but don't spend that much, shop around some more. good luck

thanks. The shop is charging me a little over $500 and then I am buying the Diablo so thats how I came up with a grand. Unless I go to LA or San Francisco that is the best price around here for the gears and install

agreed. gears are good, but there is too much hype. and then people don't realize that gears are useless unless you can get that power to the ground.

Here's what I paid:

gears/lube/parts - $160
Install - $315
Speedcal - $80

Best bang for buck by far. 4.10s, BTW. One caveat: don't expect to drop too much ET with just gears - you need sticky tires to really take advantage of the gears at the track. However, your mustang will now drive like a muscle car on the street.

Why are you gettin a programmer too? Just get a speedcal and wait for the chip until you feel that your done modding, then get a nice tune/chip.

do you think a diablo chip is a person who tunes your car at a dyno jet? Tim's ECU mail in reflash is better then any diablo mail order chip, i have heard nightmares about diablo's mail order chips. even losing power. But if someone had a diablo at a dyno jet, and tim used his EFI solutions, I'll take Tim's tune anyday.

"However, your mustang will now drive like a muscle car on the street."

Thats what I wanted to hear. Right now I really don't give a crap about 1/4. I just want to be able to take some cars up to 60 or 70 then I start pussing out anyways. BTW the closest track to me is 2 1/2 hours away so thats why I really don't care to much about ET's right now.

I paid 140 for the gears, and 125 for the install. 300 bucks got me the JMS autologic 4 program chip which also did the work of a timing adjuster. Thats a lot less than a grand!

Anyway, I certainly wouldnt fear the gear at all. I think 4.10s are just great for an NA car, but I think I'd go 3.73s if I had forced induction. Dont fear the gear, but dont pay through the nose for it either. I got ridiculously high quotes for the gear install too, but went to an all Mustang shop for a fast cheap job...
