Belt problems with a 1970

See if you can help me figure this one out. It has me stumped. I recently took the power steering components off my car (it was always leaking) and installed a manual steering linkage kit. The problem I run into now, is that there is no belt to run my fan if the power steering pump is removed (I also have no A/C compressor.) Surely there were cars in 1970 that were ordered with no A/C and no power steering. But I've been unable to locate any photos of those cars engine compartments, so I don't know how they are set up.

The first thing I thought of is having the bellhousing run the alternator, and it, in turn, running the fan. One big belt running it all. But, with my current setup, the items don't all line up together. The alternator can't go back any further, so that's out of the question. I know there are different pulleys that you can attach to the alternator, as well as the fan, that have two, sometimes three rows on them. That would obviously increase my chances. But I don't want to spend the money if I'm not sure it'll work.

Another idea I came up with was putting in a fan clutch. But I know very little about fan clutches, so I may be a little off base here. Do they require a belt to move them? If not, then that would be a perfect solution. If they do, then I'm back at square one.

Here are a couple of pictures, to help you visualize.
Thanks,

I believe the solution would lie in the water pump pulley itself - In other words you may need a different "shorter snout" pulley - or find a scrapyard double pulley. I'm not certain of engine combos and all - although I am certain that there were many cars built without p/s. This will probably be a trial and error. I thought about a spacer on the waterpump hub - but then you will have to get a shorter fan spacer. I think it'd be easier to get the correct water pump pulley

looks like the pulley on the water pump needs to come out about an inch.

what motor is that? you might be able to get a new altenator bracket that will move the alt back and then put a couple of washers on the water pump snout to move it forward a little.

if you have a 351w the alt bracket that is supposedly universalf for sbf's. will not work. summit kind of screwed me over last year over that.

if you have the bucks, then you can always go with a new pulley system from march.
it looks sweet but its spendy.

you will still need to use a belt on the pulley if you have a fan clutch.

I have the march kit on my 428 and i use one belt to connect to the crank alt and waterpump/fan. I did have to use some shims to get the waterpump to line up correctly but it was only about 1/8th inch off. Check out ebay and see if there is any waterpump pullies for your application. If you have the bucks I suggest going with march and getting a whole set.

my car is a belt car. I always tend to throw belts at the track. I was wondering what the prolem was, it was that my tensioner kept coming loose and then the belt would not spin the alternator and then the car would be dead, it happend frequently and it sucks. LoL well i guess i will just have to keep a lot of extra belts around :)

get a lock washer on it or something. You can probably also slip an aditional nut and bolt on the tension bracket behind the alternator to help give some support too.

So what did you ever end up doing with this? I just ran into this EXACT same problem today on my car when removing the power steering. I am going to call March in the morning, and if they don't have any answers I'm going to head down to my buddies shop and try a bunch of different water pump pullies and see what I can come up with. Any new advice on this same subject?

I bought a set of March pulleys for my small block, with the same setup (alt, water, crank). They have some different depths and thickness I think, as I have a fluidamper that was not allowing the pulleys to line up, so I had to ask for a special one. At least they had what I needed, try calling them up with your specific combo and see what they can offer. I don't know if you want underdrive pulleys or not, but that might be an option for you as well. A little extra power can be nice sometimes.

There is a way to run the alternator-crank-waterpump all together using a dual groove waterpump pulley I have one on the 302 in my Mach and had it setup that way before I added a/c. I actually had to space the alternator out a bit to get the pulley to line up with the outer waterpump pulley groove.

I already did the electric fan thing, I'll never go back to that again. A flex-a-lite mechanical fan is the only way to go in my opinion. I was thinking of a dual groove waterpump pulley, and the second grove is for the a/c, but I think it might line up with my alternator, but I guess I'll find out today.

Way old post from the dead! My combination of pullies I found was nothing but trouble. I went through 4 water pumps due to them spinning too fast. I have the p/s back on now. Anyways if anyone has any questions about this feel free to ask!

Everyone missed the most important step to solving this problem and thats why no one has figured it out yet.

Step 1:
Crack open an ice cold beer of extremely high caliber.

Step 2:
(If 1 beer got you hammered then wait until you are sober) Go to the bone yard and pick up an entire serpentine belt system and eliminate that ugly v-belt setup.

Step 3:
Congradulate yourself with another high quality beer or 3.
