Best oil for my new toy?

First of all hello everyone I'm receiving my new toy at the end of this month which is a 2009 Candy Apple Red Premium GT. The only other Mustang i've owned was a '79 coupe back in high school and I think it's about time for another I've been reading all of the threads on here and have done some research but would like some more info from those who have "been there done that" some with the S197 and that is the kind of oil that is best. All of the research i've done seems to be based on personal preferance. I'm leaning towards a synthetic but as far as weight/brand i'm wondering what is best? The only substantial tidbit i've come across is that there is a line of synthetics out there that is not truly synthetic (Castrol GTX primarily as I found a lawsuit about it). I want the best for my new toy thus the question. Thanks in advance for any tips!

At 3000 miles I drained the factory fill, spun on a Ford Racing filter and filled it with Mobil 1 5w-20. I imagine I'll keep doing that for the life of the car.

I think the oil topic tends to get overthought and, unless you are doing some consistent and serious racing the differences between major brand oils of the same types (ie. synthetic, conventional and blend) will prove insignificant over the life of the engine.

Just my opinion though, which is pretty much worth what ya paid for it.

Mobile 1 5w20 is great thats what i use, the best may be AMSoil. they have a 0 weight oil that is rated at 30k miles in a stock, non turbo car. you have to order that tho. i personally use mobile 1 5w20 and a mobile1 filter, and never have a problem.

I've used mobil 1 for for years, in everything from vehicles to my cub cadit and presure washer. for regular oil, I perfere motorcraft as it's a synthetic blend. For synthetics I perfere mobil 1 and royal purple. I use mobil 1 in the engine and royal purple in the tranny and rear diff, Also in my transfer case on my 4x4's.

Congrats on your new toy. Once you break it in, I would suggest Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum (5W20) or Amsoil (0W20). Motorcraft filters are great quality, designed by Ford and relatively cheap. Avoid Fram filters. I have been reading some negative reports concerning Royal Purple oil.

I switched to Mobil 1 5W20 at first oil change. Initially I used a standard Ford Motorcraft filter (not the Ford Racing), but next change I'm using K&N (also around $13 at Autozone). Mine gets weekend & good weather use only, not daily driver, very low mileage per year (< 7500), no racing (although I do let her breath every now and then). I plan to keep this one until I go horizontal...

Fram filters are horrible. They have the worst drain back valves on the market. Mobil 1 has actually gone down in it's quality over the years. Amsoil is decent oil and is on par with Royal Purple. However, I won't ever spend a dime with Amsoil, they are shady business people. I've had oil anaylsis tests done on my Royal Purple 5w20 at 10,000 miles and it came back with great results. It could easily go more than that. Honestly once you get into this caliber of motor oil, nothing is a bad choice.

So how often should you change your oil and filter if your using Mobil 1 and a motorcraft filter?

Also, how many quarts is everyone using? I use 6 even although the shop always tries to put 6.5 quarts in.

My car is over 2 years old but I have less than 17,000 miles on it, is it to late to change to Mobil 1? I've been using pennzoil.

6 quarts every 5000 miles for me.

It's never too late to change oil really those are old myths.

I've switched to synthetiv oil on cars with 130k miles. Your fine. The reasoning behind those stories is that synthetic oil has smaller molecules than dino oil, so an older car with worn out seals, it may be easier for the synthetic oil to leak out, so you may see new oil seepage. But I personally have never seen this happen, nor have any of the other techs I work with or know. Even so, your car has 17k miles, it's still a baby, so go for it.

As far as the quantity, the book says 6 quarts, so I use 6 quarts.

I just did my first oil change, and used a motorcraft filter and Royal Purple 5w20. I plan to change my oil every 4 months. In 4 months I will probably drive about 3000 miles. I know the oil is good for way longer, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and that's only 3 times a year anyway.

You should be good with any of the high end oils, be it Mobile 1, Royal Purple, etc. So whatever you prefer, go for it.
