Best way to replace rear main seal?

Hey guys/girls,

I am in the process of putting in a new clutch, and I see my rear main seal is just not cutting it anymore, (oil is all over the undercarrige, tranny, h-pipe, etc.). I want to install a new one, I am just not sure how to get the old one out properly. Any help would be appreciated.

I thought they popped out like the seal on AODE where the "axle" (spline?) goes into the tranny. I have to replace mine, so I'm interested in this also.

Take a big chisel/big flat screw driver and tap the seal inward on one end until the opposite side of the seal begins to come out of position. Then get some pliers and pull it out.
Just be carefull and DO NOT gouge the crank or the wall where it seals.


Tip #1 When you install the seal, you can put a light coat of silicon around the crank seal just for extra leak insurance.
Tip#2 When putting the flywheel bolts back in apply some teflon tape to the thread or else they may leak oil.
Tip#3 If the old seal is not too deformed you could use it to tap the new seal in.

seal puller. might do the pilot bearing at the same time.
for the latter, some use hydraulics - pack grease in there and use a drift the same size as the ID of the bearing to get it out. some use a slidehammer.

If it's the one piece rear main...I just used a small screwdriver, and a little hook thing (its a dentist tool thats come in very handy many times) and gently pried/pulled it out. To put it back in, I just used a deep well 1/4 in. socket and a little hammer and tapped it in evenly all the way around till it was flush with the crank.

As for the pilot bearing...AutoZone will let you borrow a slide hammer and pilot bearing attachment for free.99. So much easier than demolishing it or using grease to force it out.

when i removed my pilot bearing I bought a special tool from the local autoparts store for 6.99. It screws in the bearing then you squirt the grease in the tool and it slides the bearing out w/o damaging it
