BFG DRs vs ET Streets...

Whats up guys, last week I bent 2 of my factory 16" wheels after hitting some potholes. Now those were my winter wheels, so it just forced me to put my 2003 Cobra wheels back on (which I didn't mind at all, car looks soooo much better with them on :nice: ).

Now Im trying to figure out what to do with the remaining two good wheels. I've decided that I either want to put on 26 x 10.50-16 ET Streets or 255/50R16 BFG DRs. Now I figure that the ET Streets would hook better, but will I have to worry about them with my stock T5 ? Thats the main thing that I am concerned about.

I see many people with slicks listed in their list of mods and many times without a new transmission such as a Tremec. But should I take the risk of breaking my transmission? This car is my daily driver BTW. I figure I should be pretty safe with a pair of Drag Radials. What does everyone else think? Also whats everyone's best 60' with ET Streets or 16" DRs on a stock suspension? Thanks.

Get the ET streets for sure.

The tire kind doesnt really matter when it comes to busting the T-5. Its all about the 60ft times you pull. If your pulling 1.6 60ft's on nittos, the t-5 will bust sooner or later. Of course the ET street will hook much better, allowing a more consistant 60ft.

Some people have luck with there T-5's. I think since your car is a vert, and prob weighs quite a bit, the t5 will go quickly. Most people seem to bust there t5 on the 2nd-3rd shift, if you take it easy there (no power shift) it may last a while, but who knows.

My best 60ft time is a 1.705, that is on 17" nittos, with solid lower control arms, 50/50 lakewood drag shocks, and no front sway bar. No other suspension mods.

I had that exact same choice to make and I went with the DR's.

Here's why:

The E.T. Streets are bias ply tires and don't have the sidewall strength as radials do. You will feel a lot more sway in the rear at 90+ mph. It's a little scarey to get used to at first. Also, slicks will give you a lot more traction but this traction will break stock parts eventually. A lot of tracks require you to have a driveshaft safety loop installed if you run slicks. With DR's you don't need this.

I am going to put ET Streets on mine. I have 315 DR's and I still spin at the track, but the BFG's are supposedly better than my Nitto's. Sooner or later the T5 is gonna go, might as well pull some good times while it is still moving under its own power, right? :)

315 size BFG drags and you spin @ the track with 200hp??????? Something is wayyyy wrong there. Air them down and heat em up you should have NO spinning with that much meat for that little of HP. I run 245/40/18's BFG DR's and with double your HP and can still walk it out of the hole with minimal spinnage.

I ran a lot 1.6 with a stock clutch and t-5. It was when I started to run 118+ that i swapped trannies. I sold mine for $500 w/ bellhousing and flywheel to a guy doing a swap. Saved me $500 on the TREMEC.

MM&FF did a test of both of these tires a few months ago and the BFG's came up one one-hundreth (0.01) short of the ET streets in the 60 foot test. There were some inconsistencies in the test that MM&FF noted which gave the ET streets a slight advantage. I would go with the BFG's because of the extra stability they offer on the street for driving to and from the track.

i would go with the BFG's as well, also don't go to big if you put 315's on there you going to add more weight and more roatating mass which can kill your times, a thick sidewall is more importang then the width of the tire so your 16's with 245's are going to have a better foot print then 17's with 245's.

Also driver skill has alot to do with it you just can't expect 1.8 60ft times just becuase you have DR....look at my 60ft times....i can't launch worth crap and with DR's or ET's i bet I still couldn't get a 2.0 60ft time. :bang:
