Is it just me or is owning a 5.0L depressing sometimes?

Our cars are the longest running American sports car [Yes, we beat the Corvette because they skipped 83? 84?] and they have a great history. And while I love driving my 'Stang around and it does get some great looks from people, which I do enjoy... I hate the fact that I'm losing races to little >$20k 4-bangers...

We have a 302ci engine, which sounds like a bunch of power, and we're losing to little rice cars [SRT-4, 337 GTI, WRX STi, Evo....Etc...]. Hell, even the new GT is only 300ish rwhp. The new 07 Mustang GT retails for about $26,000 - and that's getting beat by little 4cyl cars with practically no work done to them.

Then my only excuse is "My bottle is empty and I'm running N/A"... So what? I have 4 extra cylinders and I'm more than twice the size of the engine in the next car. :nonono:

Just with the time, work, money, and sweat I put into my car nothing seems to come from it.. I feel like I'm bashing my head up against a wall. :bang:

Sorry guys.:(

Yea, but the way I look at it, we can make more power then tney can for the same money.

Plus we have that V8 sound.

But then again so do LS1's. lol

I guess so... It just seems like I already put enough $$$ into my car and see nothing from it.

That V8 sound does kick ass, but it also loves the gasoline. [another downfall]

And I don't mind losing to a LS1.

But your taking about turboed applications, and those cars would compare to a new Cobra. Im sure they aint beating those. Maybe you should carry around 2 bottles with you lol!!!

I don't really care if I get beet by a 4-banger rice rocket on the street. I put a ton of work and money into my car and it turns heads everywhere I take it, and always gets compliments. That to me makes all the effort worth it. But I must say that I have not really done anything significant to the engine yet, so maybe I'd feel worse if I had $10k worth of engine mods and still got beet by 4-banger cars.
As for what I have now, which is a nearly fully aftermarket suspension, I can certainly say that taking the twisties in a Mustang is WAY funner than anything FWD I've ever driven.

yeah to me its what i like and thats mustangs im not about whos the fastest car on the block i prefer style and we have that so im happy...and if it really upsets you spend 2 grand on a stroker kit it will give you a big advantage

I see all too often that people (Stang owners particularly) spend several thousand (over time) for little things like throttle bodies, mass air meters and exhaust sytems, etc... But only gain a few hp in the process and we still lose to a mojority of the new high tech ricer cars. I too am guilty of this.

If I would have just saved all that money and invested it all together for a big item, in my case a supercharger, I would have been alot happier with my car a long time ago. Stroker kits, H/C/I and power adders are the only things that are going to put you in those kinds of cars' league!!

Yep, gotta compare apples to apples as someone said. A WRX or STI is a 20 something thousand dollar car, which puts it in '03 cobra territory where in that case the Mustang is gonna be victorious. A nice '95 coupe nowadays say is around 5 gs so what 4 banger ricey car is gonna beat it up for that price? I think when you compare apples to apples we certainly come out on top, but heck if you wanna compare your car to a brand new STI, heck yeah you are gonna get owned. Either way, that's why my turbo will be completed shortly....so I can own just about everything.:nice:

Exactly.... take a $5k car + $15k worth of engine, supercharger, suspension, etc. You still won't have the money in the car some of these other guys do. If they beat you and give you a hard time. Ask them how much their monthly payment is... and when they'll be able to race their own car and stop racing the Bank's car. :rlaugh:

A while back when I just redid the heads and tune my cobra I had a neighbor punk kid wanted to race me so we did .He had a 2001 honda civic si he was bragging that his car could smoke any mustang so we raced at the track of course an I smoked him by one car length and hes like "you have nos or something because your car is too fast to be stock" I said go ahead and look and when he didnt see anything resembling a power adder( aka nos lines supercharger) just a cold air intake and headers he was so dumb founded because the average ricer always thinks his honda is faster than any other car I even smoked one with my expedition (see sig). The moral of this story is we can put a stroker kit on our motors for more horsepower cheaper than to add horsepower to a 4 banger and the average ricer not knowing that it has a stroker kit or a bigger motor. You can drop in a 351w motor in a mustang and they wouldnt even know the difference.

I could really care less if i would get beat by a brand new car. my car is a 94 and that does explain some of the shortfall on "quickness." The way i see it theres three types of people out there: the type that know nothing about cars and can appreciate how nice my car is especially being 14 years old. then theres the type that realize its a 94 and appreciate how nice it is for how old it is... then theres also the ones who think they know it all about cars, but really cant appreciate a car for what it is. these are often the young ricer crowd unfortunately which is what give them a bad name. it can also be the die hard domestic car owners who cant appreciate the smaller cars with new technology that can make lots of power with some boost. OH WELL!!!! if you're driving a street car then dont race, if you're looking for all-out performance, this same mustang will absolutley kill those little cars, but it wont be as suited for the street. It takes money to dominate... personally my pride comes from taking care of my car and getting lots of looks and compliments from those who know what they're talking about... not from winning races against people who dont apprecaite what you have or what they have. Oh yeah, and the sounds cant be beat... just ask the ladies haha :D
oh ya, and also, if you're talking big HP applications, it takes a lot more money for imports, even ask any import guy making good HP, they wont be bragging about having a cheap hobby...

I've felt this way several times before, but like a lot of what's been said I agree that if you compare apples to apples we will usually win. I also agree with the statements about the sound, because as one of my close girl-friends said "Those little cars are loud and annoying, yours is loud and... arousing." :D

Most of those ricer cars are at their MAXIMUM potential also, I mean you can take an STI and put a larger turbo on it, but that is pretty expensive from what I gather. I had a buddy with one and he said there's a whole bunch of crap he had to go through to get an upgraded turbo, would have cost thousands, and he wouldn't have gained all that much for the cost. And most of these guys with Evo's and WRX's won't turn a wrench on their cars. So when mommy and daddy's credit card runs dry, there's no more go fast goodies!!

Still, they are making some pretty respectable imports these days, there's not doubt about it. And every year they raise the bar even higher!! "Back to the drawling board" I always say..

well to compare it to newer cars is a disadvantage compare it to a 95 civic you will win :D stick with the era it was built and you will be competitive with those cars when you take 12 year old engineering and compare it to todays you will get owned

Thus my 408. Apples to apples though..turbo the v8 and YOU are at 600 HP. Do the same to your 302 and you are double their power. Period end of story. So don't sweat it. You can't just compare a restricted V8 to a blown out of control 4 or 6 cyl. Too expand on this point (what many of you don't know) OUR STOCK V8'S PUT OUT LESS EMISSIONS THAN MY 04' 6CYL BMW AND MY V6 TRUCK! LOL!

I wouldn't give up either of my mustangs for anything. I also don't live in an area that has a lot fast imports. My Cobra was faster than 90% of them with nothing more than exhaust and gears.

I do however think that Ford needs to make some changes to the new mustangs. They need to make something that will fill the market gap between the GT and Shelby GT500's.

Yep, I have observed the same things. The newer and lighter sport compacts with turbos and NOS are faster than my 12 year old Mustang. But they are slower than 99-04 Cobras most of the time. I'd rather have my larger, better looking and sounding Mustang than a sport compact anyday.

There is a mutual respect at the track though. There are some sweet Sports Compacts and I give them respect for the work it takes those guys to go faster.
I also get compliments from that crowd for my car's performance and looks.

I also work with a couple Mustang Cobra owners. One has a sweet Black 96 Cobra and another has a modded '04 Mystic Cobra that dyno'd 476RWHP. There is also an silver '01 Cobra in the parking lot.
My GT can beat the 96, hang with the 01, and is no where near the 04.

I have approximately $17g into my car including the purchase price. None of my coworkers can claim anything less than $20g just to buy their Mustangs.
