Bold on hood scoops...junk or not?

I have a 65 coupe and was wondering if anyone has experience with the bolt on hood scoops? I've seen a shelby hood scoop from mustangs unlimited...are these worth the trouble? I want the real deal, but for the time being I was wondering if this would get me by. Do they look decent or are they tacky??? Are they difficult to install?

Mine's bolt on...not my first choice, but I'm not about to go spend a couple hundred on a new one. I think it looks alright, part that bugs me is that it doesn't work...

As far as installation goes, I couldn't tell you, the P.O. did it, but I can only see two screws visable going up through the bottom of the hood and it looks like he glued the edges to the top of the hood...I guess?

If you do go the bolt on route, I'd try using some panel bonding adhesive. I think it's the same stuff used by GM to stick the fiberglass body panels on Corvettes to the steel body structure and it's available at well-stocked auto paint stores.

I can fix that problem for you in about 60 seconds.



IIRC when you install a bolt on scoop....you bolt it on then you fill with bondo to smooth the finish as apposed to a bond on scoop which is only held in place with the bondo.

I have the bolt on scoop for '65 from Mustangs Unlimited. Its functional too. I just cut a hole in the hood. As with all fiberglass, it takes some reworking to make it smooth, but the body shop did an excellent job with the scoop. There are pics on my site.

I'm halfway through bonding on a scoop to a steel hood that has a hole cut in it. Got some good body panel adhesive made specifically to bond 'glass to steel from www.autobodystore.com

Its bonded on there, and doesn't look like its going anywhere. I just need to sand/feather the edge and fill any imperfections befor having the car painted.

I am in the process of bolting on a hood scoop from www.up22.com, they have a lot of varieties for mustangs and they come with the bolts and everything. I will be making mine functinal by cutting a hole in the hood, but i had to invest in a scoop plug to keep large amounts of water out of the engine compartment.

Heh, yea it's too far forward for that, I've thought about taking the knife to it many-a-time in some creative way that will allow it to be useful.
Good ole P.O. did a poor poor bondo job as well ><
