Long story short............ I bought a 86 SVO in 01 from a guy in Las Vegas(I also had a 84). I kept it for a bit and sold it to one of my buddies. After I sold it, this guys brother called me wanting to buy the car. He was telling me that the car had the big valve head on it..........................So fast forward to this week, my buddy has put less than 800 miles on the car and the turbo does not boost..........so I bought it back from him. My question is, how can i find out for sure if it has the big valve head or the stock head without pulling the head.

Do you have X-ray vision?

There's really no way to tell without taking the head off. You can't see anything to indicate one way or another otherwise.

So, is the big valve head just a stock head that has been modified? Do they not have any marks or anything to distinguish them from the rest of the pack?

Yup and nope.

Lots of people do big valve heads, but they do that by cutting out the valve seats on a stock head, putting in new larger seats, and installing the big valves.

Well, unless it appears to be aluminum, it's a reworked stock head.

+1. Currently there are no aftermaket iron heads for the 2.3s(that may change if Rhea Performance & Machine ever gets them into production). An aluminum head could be one of several different types.

They sell one, but it's still just a reworked stocker.

Rhea Performance is supposed to have an iron performance head in the works, but I haven't heard much about it lately. The castings for it are going to come from China, BTW....

Big valve head

Ford Motorsport did make a cast iron "Big Valve" head that could be purchased thru Ford complete or bare. They are somewhat rare to find today - but I do know where one is at.

But they are still just a reworked stock head. No unique casting number. They also don't flow any better than a stock head without porting (and knowing where to port them).
