I am so happy right now fellas, I work for oreilly auto parts and see many mechanics daily. Well, today one came in and bought some parts for an 01 lincoln navigator with the 5.4 4V in it! I asked him what was wrong and he said it was for a church and it blew a head gasket. He said they were just going to replace the motor since no mechanics wanted touch the head gasket job. I asked about the old motor and he said they were going to chunk it. I offered him 60$ for it and he said I could go get it!!!! I went pick up the motor and its HUGE!!! I got EVERY part from the water pump to the COPs to the exhaust, EVERYTHING! I dont wanna waste my time trying to make the 5.4 fit, but I wanna use the heads. I yanked it down tonight and it all looks good. What do you guys think about using these heads and what problems and I looking at running into putting these on my 4.6 block? Advice please!

Well you cant really put DOHC heads on GT because it messes up compression. You need to rebuild with cobra crank, rods, pistons, intake, timing chain cover + whatever else i left out.

What do you want for the block ?

yes you can, I am looking for advice on parts like what year cobra intake manifold to use, or what timing chain to use. You cant mess up compression, you either raise it or lower it. I will know more with more research.

4V heads on a 2V shortblock lowers compression significantly. I think thats probably what Roger meant by "messing up" the compression. You're going to end up with a motor that could potentially breath well, but would be a total dog because of the low compression.

Not just compression your still going to have to sink more money into parts to get it working. Most people just buy the entire engine and go from there. Certainly worth $60 bucks though no doubt.

Good buy, 60 bucks is hella a cheap. Those heads wont change the compression too much on a non-pi 4.6 too make a differnce. You may get by with a 99+ cobra intake and headers and you will need the front cover and maybe chains and guides. you may be able to cover most the cost by selling what you dont use.

I havent heard of too many head gasket failure with modular engine but if the engine gets hot enough the heads will warp or crack to the point where they are junk and ford just released a TSB on the navi heads about poor cooling and a new updated replacement head to fix the cooling problems.

Impossiable to overheat a truck engine.

Fail safe coolant system.

How does the clown know the head gasket went???

I would re-gasket the bitch and run it.

since you have navi heads now, there will be a few probs if you chuck em on a 4.6 block. 1st the intake ports are much larger than the intake ports on cobra heads. also because of those larger intake ports, the heads are physically larger than cobra heads. because of that, a cobra intake will not sit or fit into the valley of the block. you can try to put it on, but it will only go down so far, and the intake still won't be seated on the heads yet. basically you'll need to get a custom intake made. since that's the case, i would just build the 5.4 up and swap that monster in.

exactly........

but why are you so opposed to just putting in the new engine? you are going to have just as much time in making the heads work, as you would the whole engine. if it were me i would certainly make the larger engine work, because you would have more to work with. the compression ratio couldn't be that high on the Navi engine to where you couldn't put your power adder on it, just make sure to get a good tune in it

oh, i just noticed that your power adder is nitrous. unless you are building a purpose built race motor, that motor will be a dog (talking about if you put those heads on your present block) when you aren't on the bottle. the lower compression isn't good for power in everyday driving, which is mostly what you do with your car i'm assuming. IMO you would be very unhappy with that decision if you would try to do it. the lower compression would benifit you if you were running forced induction, but not with nitrous

Listen to this guy. For the money you are about to spend to put those heads on your car to make it SLOWER, I would repair the 5.4 for the stang and swap it in. Then you have a wonderful running 4.6 engine to sell for $1k+! That should help in the parts for the swap. You would be much happier IMO with the 5.4 DOHC in your car than your 4.6 with gator heads. The time and money spent on the swap though will be a good chunk of change and an even bigger chunk of time!

I would do the same also just go ahead and swap the 5.4 in there because you have a lot on you hands when it comes time to swapping everything in. I would call HPS a because they are currently designing a into to put a 5.4 into a mustang. from what I have read and seen the ports on the navi heads are a different style than other cobra heads. but no doubt that is an excellent buy. I would use what you can and turn around and sell the rest and you should be about a grand richer.

If he ran that engine like it is it would dyno maybe 5-10hp better than what he has in his car now. He would need to get a new intake and fuel system to get any top end of the engine because that stock intake chokes the entire engine. Its made for torque at low low rpms.

Great find on that price man, but im with everyone else. Build the Navi motor piece by piece, then when your done put it in. If your going to stay nitrous, throw some forged high compression slugs in it. If it were me on the the other hand, id be pricing a twin turbo setup. That yellow single turbo fox body comes to mind again...

they'd rather swap the engine than fix a blown head gasket? I'm not mechanic but that just doesn't sound like an intelligent use of money.
