Have a few questions about the brakes on my 92 GT. First, the car was bought with 95 spindles and brakes up front, 90 Lincoln LSC brakes in rear. First question: I have a hissing sound under the dash when the brake pedal is pushed. I know this is a leaking power booster, however, I have a mushy pedal on my first brake application, after that brakes are fine. I thought with a bad booster the brakes should be hard? Also, how do you asjust the parking brake on those rear brakes? Have to pull up all the way on the handle just to get them to hold.

If the Handbrake Mod was done then crawl under the car and adjust the Nut on the Center Cable. I would also recommend a 1993 Cobra Brake Booster when you swap it out.

Can I get the Cobra booster from Autozone, etc? Anybody have a part number? As I stated before, would a failing booster cause a soft pedal on the first stop? I assumed the pedal would be hard. The brakes were bled numerous times, so there is no air in the system.

The mushy pedel is either brakes that need to be bled properly or a master cylinder that is leaking internally. The brake upgrades you are using make it necessary to use a different master cylinder from the stock one.

See http://www.svo73mm.cjb.net/ for help on brake upgrades and master cylinder information. One of the best sites around for Mustang brake help.

Thanks for the info. After reading through I have realized the previous owner just slapped on the front SN95 brakes and rear Lincoln brakes, and didnt touch anything else. Im surprised it brakes as well as it does currently. From reading I have concluded that I will need a 93 Cobra power booster and master cylinder, along with the 3-2 port conversion kit, Ford Racing proportioning valve plug kit, and an adjustable proportioning valve. WHere can I get the Cobra parts ( part number would be helpful), and where exactly does the adjustable proportioning valve go? Directions werent that clear to me. ANy help appreciated.

I got my MC from 50 Resto (http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/iwwida.pvx?;item?item_no=LRS-2140D%20%20%20%20%20%201&comp=LRS)
and a A1 Cardone Cobra Brake booster that I got off eBay for $105. The MC pictured is not the one you get, the one you get comes with a reservoir, reservoir cap, and low fluid sensor, so it's complete. The BB i've heard of people having good ones, and some bought second hand that weren't perfect, so it's a little risky. 50 Resto also has a Cobra BB (http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/iwwida.pvx?;item?item_no=LRS-2005C%20%20%20%20%20%201&comp=LRS) but it's $40 more. I believe it's the same thing that comes in the M-2300 kit.

You can order everything you need, all from That site: Prop valve, Prop plug, BB, MC, 3-2 all for around $350-$375. Do the brakes the brakes the right way for you're own safety.

Thanks fox racer, I definately want to do them right. Wish it was stock when I got it. I have a few other projects at the moment and dont have much to spend on the stang. Would it be ok to do the Cobra MC and BB with the 3-2 port conversion and do the proportioning valve mod and adj valve later? Or would it be a huge problem with the Cobra stuff and stock valve?

Okay, here's a money saver. When I did my brakes, I couldn't find a booster, so I left my stock one in place. I did put everything else on though, APV, Cobra MC, Stock PV removed and the 3-2 conversion. I've noticed that under frequent braking like rush hour traffic or downtown, my pedal firms up after the first few times. During normal driving however the stock booster retains enough vac. to work properly. So you can get away without the booster upgrade, but I would still do everything else. I'm pretty sure that the 3-2 conversion for the cobra MC requires deleting the stock perportioning valve, so you should get the adjustable pv to replace it. I did mine so long ago I don't remember exactly though.

edit: just got to thinking about it and I used SN95 rear disk brakes so I'm not sure if the lincoln brakes have the same flow requirments so my booster comment is iffy too.

Hope this helped! :D
