Brake Upgrade on 95 GTS

:nice: For ONCE! I like chopped liver. Noonions or nuth'n. And a prodigious phriggin' puck pic to boot. His explaination of a rotors job is about as concise as you get.

For some solid tech, brought in heaping spoonfuls, go here:

Pay attention to Maddmatt; he actually knows his ass from his elbow. That has probably been posted on here before, but it's one of my favorite threads ever.

AFAIK, the only way to improve the brakes AND make them lighter is by using regular GT brakes off a 99 or newer. If you want significant braking improvement, your best bet is Cobra brakes, but they weigh a noticable amount more than the stock GT brakes do.

Dave

Sorry Dave, but you're wrong. You can have your cake and eat it too when it comes to replacing the brakes on a 95. Not only can you get some serious stopping power, but you can drop some serious weight as well. Unfortunately, you're going to pay out the ass for it. Hint: monoblock calipers and 2-piece rotors.

If you're doing it on the cheap, look at some cobra/bullit calipers and 2-piece rotors (like the Baer eradispeeds). You'll still be looking at some coin for the rotors though.

Dan, I contacted Baer on the eradispeed rotors an they told me they were HEAVIER than the stockers. I was looking into them as I heard they were lighter than stock. I figured if I could drop 16lbs with the calipers, andy more I could drop with the rotors would be an added bonus. They also told me to expect to pay around $350 for just the plain jane rotors, not the plus or plus 1 stuff!!!

I am also in dire need of a brake upgrade but I have no idea where to start. Is there a kit that comes with everything I need so I can just bolt them on?

I can help you out. I can sell you a Cobra upgrade kit with the hoses and mounting bracketes, bolts, calipers with mounting brackets, pads $460 + shipping. :nice: The calipers are Red Powdercoated and say COBRA on them and are new Ford pieces as are everything else in the kit.

Interesting. I read an article awhile back that had the weights listed as being right around 4# less per rotor (IIRC). Further, my common sense tells me that unless the rotor is pretty funky on the baers, there's no way a 2-piece, aluminum hat rotor weighs more than a 1-piece cast rotor... unless they were comparing the stock 11.65" GT rotor to a 13" Cobra rotor. Don't suppose you have any details?

And their price must have come waay down. I haven't looked at them recently but when I was, they were wanting over a grand for the set (front and rear). There's no way in hell that I'd pay that much for rotors for the measly Cobra calipers. Maybe if they cleared the Brembo 4-pots...

I just called them and asked about a set of eradispeed rotors for the GT PBR calipers, not the cobra setup and he said it was heavier. I called because I saw on PHR TV that they were supposedly lighter, the tech there told me otherwise.

Mysteries abound. My gut says the tech was either misinformed or ignorant. But who knows, maybe they had their manufacturer add mass to the rotor to make up for the loss of heat sink in the hat.

It really defeats the entire purpose of the 2-piece rotor design though. Plus, it puts weight further out from the center, increasing rotational inertia, and slowing you down. I may eat my words later, but I say the eradispeeds are lighter, regardless of what the tech said.
