hey guys, quick question about the brakes on a 2001 Expedition....

My mom's 01 expo's brakes are pretty much gone. Its time to replace and i was thinking about maybe getting her some bigger rotors so she can stop that beast quicker. :D I'm a loving son :nice:

My question is how big can you go on the expedition's? i dont know anything about them. Also does someone make a bigger or better caliper or is stock pretty much the only option?

Also what about pads and steel lines?

I know its not a mustang thread, but its still a FORD :flag:

Thanks SN :nice: :SNSign:

lager rotors would require a different caliper bracket at minimum. one thing I have noticed about brake upgrades is larger rotors usually = differet caliper which = more $$$.

stainless lines, freshly turned rotors, nice pads, should give you a decend brake feel inmprovment I would think without breaking the bank.

hmm well it sounds like everyone is against my idea...which is cool. but does anyone know where i can look this info up at? or who makes the kind of rotors or calipes that i might need?

i dont know if you can even turn the rotors on a Expy. a lot of the larger ford rotors are one time use only. espeically if they have hard spots on them, i never turn a rotor with even 1 hard spot on it. also if its a 2001, that means it probably has already had 1 pad swap done, so the rotors are gone anyway.

Ford Motorcraft brake hardware is very good quality stuff, a fresh set of OEM rotors/pads, and fresh fluid will make that pedal feel much better. If you want fancy, paint the calipers and buy some ebay slotted/drilled rotors.

If you want bigger rotors, you're might have a problem fitting them under the wheels.. the next step up in size is probably 13" for those, which requires 17" wheels. I dunno what size wheels come on them.. but thats what youll need.

ok cool, well i know that she has a stock rim/tire setup and it is a 17.

I'm wondering if we got a 13" rotor, would it work with the stock caliper? if not which caliper would be the right one?

If it's a 4x4 expy you will never get the rotor off to cut it. If I bother cutting it I do it with our on car machine.

BTW you may want to have a large sledge ready to remove the rotors. A lot of times I have to smash the rotor untill the part of the rotor where the pads contact cracks free from the rotor hat, 99 pecent of the time they end up a 2 peice rotor when you finally get them off.

Maybe in cali where you are the cars do not rust as bad so you might not have as much of a problem with this.

Holy ****. Ive never heard of breaking one getting it off..Ive never even heard of breaking one at all  Ive kicked one once to pry it loose, but most of the time the rotors dangle freely when the calipers are off

04gtdrop,

The 13" rotor will not fit the stock caliper. I'm in the middle of upgrading my GT to 13" Bullitt(cobra/mach1) setup, all I needed was the cobra calipers(+pads) and rotors.. Stock GT lines fit. You might find the explorer has a similar setup. I would compare part #'s and perhaps call up Ford Racing and ask them what will fit.

The brakes on the Expy are already pretty good. No upgrade needed. I'm not sure about the 01 but my 97 needed the bearings repacked after the rotor swap. Pain in the rear but they are built into the rotor so there is no way around it. I just swapped the pad the other day on mine. It's like a 20 minute job.

you have rotors dangle free on expy's and F-150.. WOW thats awsome. I NEED to move down south. Up here brand new cars are rusted.. the torch up here is your best friend

most other cars are fine but up in the north east the hub centric trucks rotors rust weld themselfs to the hub and have to be broken off.

someday I will make a video of this if you want to see it. it takes me about 5 baseball style swings with a sledge to break the rotor braking surface fromt he hat. they look funny afterwards, the rotors have no center to them when your done.

Thats a 2WD expy. I have only seen one of those in my life. it was owned by a guy on vacation from texas.

the 4x4 models use a hub centric sandwich style rotor with sealed non packable wheel bearings. the problem I stated above happens when the rotors rust up here in the salt and snow and then you can't get them off with out cracking the rotor surface from the rotor hat.
