For exhaust you might want to start out with an off road H or X pipe. The X will make a little more power, but IMHO the H sounds better. H pipes have a deeper sound and X pipes are more raspy sounding. Pypes makes a decent quality midpipe which is fairly inexpensive. Most people who go to an off road H pipe are happy with the stock axle back mufflers, Ford really did a good job with them. I have since added Flowmasters and I don't think they sound nearly as good as the stock mufflers as far as sound quality goes, but they are a bit louder.

You should definitely find out what the local tuner in your area uses even if you are going to buy a packaged CAI/tuner with preloaded tunes. That way, if you end up wanting a dyno tune down the road you are not stuck with the wrong handheld tuner. As far as I know there is really no advantage to having either a Diablo or SCT since they both do the same thing.

Check out BamaChips Tuning or Brenspeed. Both companies are highly recommended.

The best 1st mod is going to be an intake/tuner combo like Mikeys said from BamaChips Tuning or Brenspeed. I think a great cat-back exhaust for the money is the Pypes Mid-Muffler system. I would check out some sound clips on it and you can find it online for $300.

I think the stock mufflers do sound good other then not being loud enough but they just looked bad imo. I went with the Flows and love the sound and look but if I had to go back and do it over, I think I'd go with the Pypes Mid Muffler exhaust.

Everyone who has posted above me, their opinion is flawed. The best mod you can do to one of these cars or any mustang rather if it is stock is get rid of that crap stock shifter.

I bought my '08 new with 8 miles on it and i put them on it during the test drive, and the following week friday my MGW shifter was sitting at my door and it was installed. Did that before 500 miles were on the clock.

If you're going for sound though i would really recomend(SP?) an Xpipe and some sort of straight through muffler, bassani or borla(ford racing stinger) gets my vote. I got frpp stingers and they are great, but dont have an xpipe yet. When i get an xpipe it will be the pypes because if im not mistaken it is SS and is an x crossover design and not an x chamber like the bassani and bbk peices. Something for you to check into. I had a BBK xpipe on my old GT and it sounded like hell, went from that to a magnaflow and it was a total different sound.

From what i have read/heard around town and from tuners and guys who have worked on these say that the exhaust is not the most restrictive part on these cars its the intake. So if you want power i would say go for that.

I'd get a cantune from bamachips with there CAI. Then an ORX for sound. For me I'm not bothering with a CAI as I plan on a mammoth kit, and I don't plan on a shifter as I plan on a tr6060. It may be smart to come up with a plan so you can buy stuff that will still be useable then as it will be now.

A local tuner is usually a dyno shop that can hook your car up to a dyno and give you a custom tune. You can also get mail order tunes from Bamchips and Brenspeed which tune your car without hooking it up to a dyno. Its not as good but its cheaper and good if you don't live near a good dyno shop.

They are called off-road or x road pipes because they remove the cats which is illegal in most states but not a law thats usually enforced unless you have emissions test.

I have no experience installing gears but I think it would be better if done by a good shop.

And I think s-197 is the name they give the platform for 05+ model mustangs.

Look, save yourself a lot of effort. Hold on to your bonus check and save up for a twin screw super charger or turbo to drop into your Mustang. You will never regret it. I dropped my 2008 with Eibach Pro springs before I had 100 miles on it and before I had 3,000 I installed a Kenne Bell 2.6L intercooled kit (took that long to convince my wife that I "really" needed it). It flat flies!!!

One of the best parts about the supercharger is no one really knows till I squeeze the throttle and I'm gone! The look on the dude in the Porsche Boxster S last night was classic when I smoked him (disclaimer - I do not condone street racing... it's dangerous so don't do it).
