buffers need some more help please

after about 6 hours sanding down the back of my alt all the way up to 400 grit.(i used a dremel for the first sanding coat which tore it up alot) used tripoli first then white rouge. it has a hazzy shine to it but the edge's shine like crazy. I cant figure it out? to much tripoli? to little? to little white rouge to little? It is my first attempt and came out nice but nothing like ALMOST STOCK or MANSOON etc. what did i do wrong? next i am gonna try my alternator brackets.

Do you have any pics? What is the max RPM your drill will operate at? I would not buff with less than 2500 RPM's. I don't think it is possible to use too much Tripoli or White Rouge, as long as you use the Tripoli first. I personally would not use a Dremmel. To many RPM's and the sanding disc can't cover a large surface area at once that can cause grooves. Remember, what ever grooves or scratches that remain after the Tripoli, will still remain when you use the WR. Get is as flat and smooth as possible before Tripoli or WR.

I had the same problem. What I ended up doing was going with higher grit sand paper. I went up to 2000 grit, which sucked because sanding sucks. Everyone has a different style, you will need to experiment untill you find your own personal way. Also, some pieces take more work than others.

stang 22- how did you get yours that nice? i used 150 220 320 then 400 grit sand paper and it was nice and smooth. i just dont get it? i used a little dremel wheel so maybe that was it? next i will use my 6" buff wheel.

I went over mine about 3-4 times with Tripoli before I was satisfied enough to use the White Rouge. Just like anything else, your prep work is the most important. I would only use the dremmel for those hard to reach places and use a good drill (at least 2500 rpm) with your 6 inch buffing wheel. Do you have a nylon wheel? Make sure you use a seperate wheel for the Tripoli and WR. Let me know if you need anymore help.

starting with 150 grit may not be getting all of the original flaws out. on your next piece try 80 then 120, 180, 220, 320, 400....when u are in the first few grits u CANNOT skip too much grit or it wont remove the scratches (for example going from 80-150). and also spend more time on tripoli maybe....dont waste your time with the 1000 and 2000's....spend the time on the lower grits. good luck

i have two sewn 6" wheels,(i have a varible speed elec. black-n-decker 2700 rpm drill i am gonna use) i am gonna do my rad brackets next i guess and hope they come out good. Maybe this time i will do 100 150 220 320 400. and see how that goes since the brackets are already smooth. thanks to all those who helped i will post my results with the brackets.
