So i've all but made the final deal on getting a cobra with 30000 miles in NE houston. I'm picking it up this saturday and was wondering if anyone knows a good shop i could take it to before i actually hand him the money. I live in dallas and have a buddy pre-checkin it for me right now but would like to have someone who knows these cars to give it the once over and tell me its as clean as he says it is. Thanks

Ryan Ford on the west side of Houston near Katy are pretty good. They are a motorsports dealer,I think and are always selling Cobras.

Also there is Tommy Vaghn Ford of which is also a motorsports dealer,Ive never delt with them but I have heard nothing but good of them,I believe they are in central Houston.Just stay away from Lone Star Ford...their mechanics are a bunch of idiots. There is a really good speed shop there but I cant remember the name.

Thank you for the suggestions. Those are all quite a ways from where he lives, but i'll look into driving it over to one of those places. He lives near beltway and I-10 east. Anyone over in that direction?

Steve Drier, owner of Houston Performance, is not a bad guy. Ive dealt with him over the years, they tuned one of our cars. I havent seen or bought anything from him in years

Back in the late 90's, all of the old school mod motor guys only used HP to tune their cars here in houston, being the only autologic people around, that was the way to go. A couple people had a few bad builds, not sure what they are now.. Years ago, they had a great shop and steve was great. However, Ive heard bad stories about them over the years. Hard to say because ever single shop has at least a few bad stories floating around.

Ive always used Richard Lelsz at Strictly Performance(they have won a number of NMRA championships). They have done tons of work over the years on my cars. However, I dont use them anymore as they have become so big that they have too many mechanics and way too many cars at one time. Plus, Greg Flatt, the original mechanic, is no longer there.

I would stronly recommend a family mechanic that I trust as much as anybody around.

The guy has built some of the top offroad racing vehicles around. He specializes in Toyota Landcruisers and has been in many of the top offroad magazines. He will not steal your money, and not scam you or give you wrong information. Let him know you want the car checked, and specify if you want to a compression test or anything else done. PM me for more info about him.

Buying the car from the Channelview/Pasadena area? I live somewhat in the area :)

As for getting it checked out--I'm sure most shops will be able to give you a basic check up and there are a few shops in the NE side of Houston such as Slaters (in the Humble area which isn't too terribly far away) that would be able to do so.
