Not sure about it being lighter, but depends on what kind of driving you do.
Highway? Then you wanna keep an AOD.
Just street driving and keep the cost a little lower? Then a C4, as it's only a 3 speed.
But others will tell you to go with a T5 conversion.

The C4 is stronger and better for racing. The AOD keeps a little gas mileage and with a few extras can be made just as strong as a C4.

I would be all over that, redneck makes some good converters. If you never had a good automatic your in for a surprise. C4's are great.

t5 manual tranny c0nversi0n. id think that 3k stall and a c4 w0uld be better than a t5 especially since the t5 w0nt last l0ng behind that m0t0r at the track

Yes and no but mostly no. Technically the AOD flexplate will work if you are using a 164t bellhousing on the C4. Problem is that I have found the big bell to have clearance issues in a Foxstang. I tried it once and it hit the H-pipe and there was no way O2 sensors would have fit if I had needed them. This was with shorties and I'm pretty sure it would have been worse with long tubes. The 157t bellhousing fits much better but they are getting hella hard to find. Now if you use the 157t bell like I did, you will need an aftermarket flexplate since any factory 157t flexplate used with the c4 would have been 28oz. TCI makes a 157t/50oz flexplate for use with a c4/5.0 and it was only like $65. Also keep in mind that converters are specific to which flexplate/bell you are using so make sure to get the correct stall for your setup.

Now beyond the techincal stuff...the C4 is definately lighter than an AOD and for racing I think its a better setup since you dont have the one-dee-one shuffle to deal with (unless you have a built AOD) but in a daily driver with deep gears, its a pain. I had a C4 with 3.73's in my 93 vert and it was no fun on the highway at all. If the budget allows, I would say a nicely built AOD would be the way to go in a car that sees much street time.

I run a C4 with 4.10s and a 28in tall tire. Not to bad for street driving, but the rpms are high on the highway.
I'm deep into the ten with the combo and would never look back. I went from a t5 to the C4.

What balance does a 1968 302 use and a 1982 c4? I bolted those two together with the larger bellhousing and it worked fine? Are they supposed to be different balances?
