C-Clip elminiators

I've got the Cobra rear brake upgrade kit for my daily driver and I'm going to be installing it soon. Obviously I need to yank those rear axles. I hate the c-clip design. In fact I hate the entire 8.8" really. The 8" and 9" are so much easier to work on. Anyways, I digress. I was thinking of throwing some c-clip eliminators into the rear end while I was there. I started looking them up and I saw this on the Ford Racing website:
M-4220-A
Retains axle externally
Eliminates need for C-Clips at differential
Mandatory for spools and wherever required by sanctioning bodies
Fits axle shafts with 1.400" dia. bearing journal
Not recommended for road racing applications or rear disc brakes

Whats the deal with that last line ? Not recommended for road racing or rear disc brakes ? Is this just a BS disclaimer or what ?

I looked up Moser's kit and checked their website but they didn't say anything about that.

Any recomendations on which kit to buy ? Ford/Strang/Moser/other ?

You can't use C-clip elims with rear disks. They interfer. Also they won't take extreme lateral loads like in RR'ing

You'd basically have to remove your rear disks and run drum brakes to use them.


I agree with you on the c-clips being a scary design, but when was the last time you heard about someone's c-clip failing. Pretty simple, but it does the job

No it's not BS, there have been several articles lately about "c" clip eliminators. Do not run them on the street, the bearings don't lube like the stockers and will seize up. They are a drag only item designed to keep the axle in place if the "c" clips break.
Now that I've said that someone will produce a "c" clip eliminator for the street and 8 million people will tell you that they run them.
Your results may vary.

The ones on the Moser website said something about needing professional install. I saw the directions for the Chevy version and I noticed you have to cut the axle flange off or something crazy like that and you need a press to install the bearing onto the axle.

I don't suppose these work well on a street car either.

I don't like the c-clip design because I just think its scary as hell. I don't like the 8.8" all together because I believe you should be able to remove the 3rd member from a rear end and the 8.8 wont let you do that.

But it's a pretty much proven design. Millions of vehicles are made each year with c-clips and you never hear about failures.

I almost paid to have some 31 spline axles I got a really good deal on installed that had the c-clip eliminators. They were the Moser axles. The shop I took it to said that they could keep the disc brakes in the back, but that they would have to machine some of the axle in some spots, and that I would lose ABS. All of the added cost turned me off to that, and I sold those axles and picked up some regular c-clip 31 spline axles, and they were awesome the whole time I had them. All they are good for is if you blow an axle, it will keep your wheels on, and everything in the case.

well i'll be the different one here.

i've been running c-clip elims for almost 2 years with no problems. i have moser axles and elims. you need to have your backing plates machined to fit the elims and you lose your ABS rings. you also need to trim some excess metal off the end of the axle housing. i dont see why you would have a problem running these on the street. i dont
