c&l mass air meter

i was looking into buying a new mafs and was checkin out the C&L 76mm. the question i came upon is do we need to get a 94-95 specific meter or will a, say '93 meter fit our car? i was lookin around and saw that the year ended at 93..

it depends on what type of induction you have. I've used Fox 73mm and 76mm C&L MAFs and still have the 76mm on my car. I simply knocked the flange off of my CAI, got another rubber sleeve connector from a speed shot and hooked the MAF right up no problem! :nice: The only SN95 specific portion is the sample tube as you can't use a Fox 24# tube for an SN24# car etc.

I follow you with no prob about how the SN has the flange mount method.

The only SN95 specific portion is the sample tube as you can't use a Fox 24# tube for an SN24# car etc.

I don't have any experience with C&L mafs so I don't doubt what you are saying here but would you please explain why you say this. I'm just curious about this ....... thats all.

No problem Grady, the Fox and SN computers are calibrated differently (god only knows why). If you go C&L's website http://www.cnlperformance.com/calibration.html you can see that for the same sized MAF, different cars use different sample tubes for the same sized injectors. I think this is based on the signal that the MAF needs to read and send to the computer which differs between different computers. I saw an SN guy try running a Fox 24# sample tube on his 73mm and he had a pinging issue. I bought his 73mm MAF, put the proper SN95 24# sample tube in and it ran well.

You can use it, you just need to buy the 24# sample tube for the SN95s which is $36.00 shipped. I've used both the 73mm and 76mm, both from Fox mustangs this way. There is no physical difference between the Fox and SN MAFs apart from the flange which is not related to the MAF signal sent to the computer, it's the sample tube that sends the signal which is interchangeable.

I saw about the cal tubes.

Up until this time, I knew about the different cal tubes but I thought the only difference between them was for different sized inj's.

What I don't understand is ....................

If the C&L is caled for lets say the air flow that 24lb inj's need, what difference does it make if you got a 89 or a 95 Stang.

There is some part to this whole C&L deal that I'm not aware of cause things just don't make logical sense here. :shrug:

Can somebody give me a clue :rlaugh:

Sorry Grady, I didn't see the deluge of website calibration carts shot at you when I replied. :bang: The reason the MAFs need a different set of calibration tubes for a Fox, vs an SN95, vs a T-bird is each used a different computer with different settings from the factory. Each computer interprets the signal strength differently depending on how Ford programmed the computer for performance. I guess an example is how the SN95 computer has been set up to interpret the IAT sensor readings in the CAI vs the Fox's behind the #5 runner. One takes into account being in contact with a hot mainfold and the other being in a rubber tube. What is totally unknown to me is if I'd switch to the Fox A9L computer would I need to use the Fox or SN sample tube? My gut feeling is I'd use the Fox tube but I really don't know. :shrug:

however
I did see in another thread the missing piece of this puzzle.

The whole premise behind the C&L concept is that you install the electronic module from your oem, stock maf on your new C&L meter.

Now it makes perfect sense to me :banana:

C&L is basing things off of not only the stock electronics, but the maf transfer curve in the pcm as well.

Thats the reason a Fox and a 94-95 C&L maf will not use the same cal tube even though the application is the same.

Makes me kinda wanna say ... I see said the blind man to his deaf son, lol

Thanks for this thread btw. My participation was ment to be a learning kind of thing and not a hijack.

I guess if the truth be made known ...... I'm most likely the only one who was in the dark about this issue. :rlaugh:
