Hemet CA.
Hello. I have a 93 GT aod that I want to put a C4 in. My question is what if any extra or aftermarket parts will I need to complete the install. This is by far the best stang forum on the net. So any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You need a matching block plate, flexplate, torque converter, bellhousing and C4. An aod blockplate and flexplate will work. I believe they are 164 tooth units with the 11+ in large bolt circle. The flexplate has to have the right balance for your engine, 50 oz type for 93. I only mention this because C4's go way back and early flexplates are 28 oz.

The stock auto trans starter should bolt in. The crossmember should work, as should the trans mount.

The speedometer cable for an aod works, I think. I know the gears interchange. T5 gears don't fit.

The C4 needs a hose to the modulator of manifold vacuum. It also need a kickdown linkage to the carb or throttle linkage if you want it to downshift at full throttle. If you go with a fully manual valvebody, you can get by without those.

Needs a shifter. I believe an aod floorshift will work.

Also need the neutral safety switch. The C4 mounts it over the shaft where the shift lever exits the housing.

A matching driveshaft yoke. Remember to get a trans dipstick. Also cooler lines.

I suggest staying with the AOD if that is what you have. The C4 should not be considered an efficeint swap for ANY street car. The AOD will hold just as much if not more than the C4 with some mods.

I feel the need to elaborate on what RD said about using the AOD flexplate and seperator. The AOD stuff is 164t and will phisically bolt up to the C4 assuming that you have the "large" C4 bell which is the most common to find since they were in alot of trucks and stuff. If you are injected, the large bell will not clear O2 sensors, at least mine didnt. I tried it. I would imagine that long tubes would be an even bigger problem. Your best bet is to find a "small" 157t C4 bell and matching seperator. They can be a challenge to find but are a better fit. There is also a "small" mustangII specific bell so make sure you dont get that but you would have a better chance of finding unicorn poop. And keep in mind that converters are specific to whatever bell you have. TCI makes a flexplate specifically for this application that is reasonably priced. Its 50oz imballance to work 85+ 5.0's. Some older stock auto shifters will work but I dont think an AOD shifter will work. You might be able to rig something depending on what lever you had on the trans. They came with either a column or floorshift lever. The AOD shifter will pull the wrong way on the floorshift lever but maybe for the column shift one if your crafty.

With that said, I would put the money into building the AOD and a stall rather than the C4 unless the car is track only. The C4 with 3.73 gears was no fun on the street and I wont be doing it again.

If you use your car for a daily driver i would agree that the aod is better but if you can stand it the c-4 will give you 3-5 tenths in the 1/4 due to the reduced overall weight and mainly reduced rotating weight. The C-4 is also cheaper to build. I disagree on getting a small bell C-4 they aren't as strong as the big bell version. I have no problems with mine fitting. The c-4 can be streetable with 355 gears but not comparable with overdrive. The c-4 is also cheaper to build.
I had to give the c-4 a few positives because everybody was being so negative about it. I have to admit c-4s are only for those of us who want to go fast.:D

Thanks for the info guys. After hearing the down falls of the c4 maybe I will just keep the aod and build on that. Thanks again.

It's nice when we all agree on somthing.....THE AOD has a bad rap, but all-in-all it is accualy a GREAT trans, you just have to reveal it's hidden talentes :)

I agree great trans and bullit proof when built correctly but the rotating weight is so great that it can never be as efficient as a five speed or a C-4.
Great trans either way great for daily driving and a little strip. I ran one for years. :nice:

I was planning on using the C4 when I build my car because PA offers one for $1800 w/ lifetime warranty guaranteed up to 1000hp. I plan on doing some light cruising and drag racing. Roughly...how many RPMs would I be turning at 55-60 mph with 3.73s and a C4? Thanks.

2200rpm-2800rpm depending on tire size.
