C4 To T5 Swap In A 1966 With An Inline 6

if you have a 250, then the bell housings are the same and things just bolt into place. however if you have the 144/170/200/3.3l then you cannot use the V8 bell housing, except perhaps in modified form on a 81-83 3.3l with the low mount starter(the starter mounts below the oil pan lip).

for a high mount starter small six you need the small six bell housing. there are three different ones by the way, one mounts the 2.77 four bolt top cover three speed trans, one mounts the 3.03 9 bolt top cover three speed trans, and one mounts the dagenham four speed, chances are you wont find this one any where these days so lets concentrate on the other two. either one has a specific adapter plate that you bolt ot the bell housing which then allows you to use the T5. you should be able to find the adapter plates at www.classicinlines.com or a number of other mustang parts suppliers including NPD and california pony cars.

be sure you get the right adapter plate they do not interchange.

you then need a manual trans flywheel and clutch. again there are two different flywheels available, one has a recessed area for the disc, one has a flat surface. the recessed clutch is 8 1/5" and the flat wheel is 9". as indicated you can find a lot more information at www.fordsix.com in the forums, specifically in the transmission and drive train forum. we have a sticky with nearly all the answers about this swap.

then there is a need for a proper pilot bearing, throwout bearing, clutch linkage, etc. the swap isnt a tough one to do, but you do need to match the parts properly otherwise you can run into some serious headaches.

one more thing, you will need to shorten your drive shaft, and you will need a T5 specific crossmember for your application as the trans mount is in a different location.

It just occured to me that when I had my 6 cyl motor with a c-4 trans that I also had 2.90 (or close, tall hwy gear) gears in my rearend. If you have 2.90 gears your not gonna ever be able to shift into 5th gear cause you wont even need to unless your running like 100mph... I have a V-8 with a T-5 and 3.55 gears, and I cant shift into 5th unless I`m on the interstate...
