I have been thinking about upgrading my '68 C4 tranny to a newer AOD to get better fuel economy. I would need to do this on a very low budget but have no idea where to start. I'm not a mechanic but I'm a decent handyman. Is this a job anyone can tackle?
if you have ever done a transmission R&R before, and you can follow directions regarding how to adjust things properly, then yes you can do this job yourself.
yah, it can be done.... don't be afraid. You will need to modify or buy a new trans mount, and the drive shaft length may change as well. The most important thing...... TV ADJUSTMENT!!!! this is the throttle valve line pressure arm that sticks out of the side of the trans. (Lokar makes a nice set-up... although pricey its good stuff). There have been many many many posts about this on this and other forums... do a search. Bottom line, go for it, you will be glad you did. I love mine!
my 71 250 aod swap went easy. came from 86 cougar 5.0, I got a tci constant psi valvebody, summit, $240.00 to prevent meltdown if
tv adjustment goes out. i wanted firm shifts and no skip shifts. nice 4-3 downshift getting off freeway. I bent my stock shifter rod to fit, cut my trans crossmember around the pan area, used donor car tv cable with angle steel bracket on my throttle bracket, cut my c4 front yoke [recess area] about 1".
rolled bead on oil lines and slipped hose connectors on. i had to buy a 6cyl aod flex plate $30.00, you'll need to check balancing
