Calling all AOD guys, Shift Points??

I lock mine into 1st, manually shift it into 2nd by flicking it up to D, then going back down to 1 again to hold it in 2nd...then put it back up into D again. That technique, with my 150,000+ mile AOD is good for 13.7 passes...I can't complain! Never use OD for racing. If your trans will even LET you (mine won't)...it's bad for the OD band it will burn it out...and it slows you down big time too. The gear reduction is too much...AOD's have tall overdrive ratios, I think something like an 0.68:1

Btw, due to MASSIVE transmission slip, my 1-2 shift point is about 6400 rpms, and 2-3 is about 6200. Assuming the factory tach is correct. This motor is one rev happy SOB with these heads and the fairly high-lift cam + 1.6 rrs

We were just discussing a similar problem
about 2 threads down about the early shift on an aod.....I personally(even with a shift kit) have my TV cable marked with my stock setting and my track setting and make adjustments accordingly......shifts much later and harder!!!

you can make your aod hold second gear all the way through just start in first and wind it out till whatever rpm you want to shift at then shift it into D after the trans shifts gears put it back in 1 it will stay in second gear until you put it back in D, I don't recomend this with a stock transmission, it will tear it up quickly but you will go alot faster in the Quarter

I use 1-d-1 all the time. Of course I've discovered that there is nothing I can physically do to this ancient AOD to blow it up. I need an excuse for a new tranny but I'm in debt...so I can't buy one unless I have to.

I've neutral dropped it a little bit...1-D-1 shuffle all the time.....I dont think my torque converter lockup works anymore so it overheats on the interstate...leaks fluid everywhere...bumped line pressure, like bumped a LOT. Used to bark second gear. Two full bottles of Lucas Slipfix in it. Driven daily, raced often..... Gotta love it.

my tranny has been bullet proof too. i beat the sh$t out of it. 102,000 just keeps going like the day i bought it. when it does go imgoing to replace it with something stronger and stall for sure or even a 5 speed.

I've got some ideas for your unbreakable trannies :P

1. Put it in D and drive it to around 45-60mph and then pop it into reverse a couple times...

2. Put it into 1st gear and just rev the **** out of the engine, then pop it into reverse..

That should fix your unbreakable problem quite nicely.

102,000? That's nothing! I'm at 160,000! BEAT THAT!

Haha oh and I know there are ways that I COULD break it...but I've been trying to break it without BLATANTLY tryng to break it, killing my engine in the process, or totally disabling the trans to the point that the car has to get towed. I just want to burn out O/D, maybe get some hardcore slippage in 2nd gear too....

Do I have an AOD-E trany or AOD(is there a difference)? 94 gt vert. Also wondering if I get a shift kit and a H&M Rachet shifter would I have to do the 1D1 to keep it in second, or will I have total control? I want a triptronic like trany, Auto around the city but if I want to race I have total control! As of right now, with OD off, and I'm racing (full throttle) switches right before the red line; sometimes it goes into the red for a before switching, and you feel the switch but it seems rather slow. I'm new with this Automatic stuff, last 4 cars were manual, but all I4 cylinder ricers (I know I know, leave me alone).

I *want* to say you've got the AOD-E, but I'm not positive. You might still have the standard issue AOD....it'd be better to get an AOD cause you could get one of those B&M transpak plug in units or something of the like...and change shift points and firmness with just that unit. AOD's, you have to do it the old school way; shift kit or tv cable adjustment.

so at what rpm should i be changin gears at?
i also have an aod tranny. Should i wait all the wait until 6k rpm before i go from 1-d and then right back to 1?
Do i ever let off the gas while i do the 1-d-1 or do i keep my foot on the gas the whole time.
thanks.
I'll probably be racing my buddy with his modded v6 tomorrow so this info will come in handy.

Keep your foot on the gas the entire time.

Shift at 5400RPM on the 1-2 shift and 5200RPM on the 2-3 shift.

Practice it before hand because when you shift it may take a few seconds to shift. If you want to shift at 5200, you might need to start the shift at 5000

Sorry I didnt read all the posts,so I hope no one said this.I have a trans go kit also, but mine came with a rev. gov. When the shifter is in D,its shifts at 5400.BUT,,I get better times when I leave it in OD,a few tenths quicker!!! In OD,it shifts at 4900.(Its a stock motor)

I have the transgo AOD-HP kit with the rev gov too. In D at wot with a cool tranny it will shift in the 57-5800 rpm range on it's own. couple hundred lower in OD at WOT on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. The 1-D-1 shuffle IMO isn't harmful in and of itself, just the tranny is week. Since doing the 1-D-1 shuffle simply holds the gear that the tranny is already in but shifts at a high rpm which I think is the reason it takes it's toll on the weak aod's. If you have a built up tranny I wouldn't worry about doing the shuffle at all since the upgraded internals should have no problem holding together. OD shifts under power is no good, keep it in 3rd

The 1-D-1 shuffle is not recommended because the valve body is not designed to do it. It will, mind you, but it's not good for it. The technical explanation is a bit much for my simple mind (and lazy fingers).
