Cam change

I was wondering how hard it is to change the cam. I was reading some manuals and it doesn't sound too hard but just wanted some pointers. I already have the intake off and about to take the heads off to replace. The only thing I can see that would scare me is getting the timing right.

it's easy man. when you have the heads off, turn the motor over by hand until the #1 piston is at TDC. right before you start putting it all back together, stab the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the #1 post on the dist cap.

I was also noticing that that there are alignment dots on the cam and crank sprockets.

those dots are to line up the cam and the crank to each other. when you are replacing the timing chain you line up the dots in order to make sure the timing is correct when you throw the new parts on.

yeah that's exactly what they are for; to set the timing. when the #1 piston is at TDC, those dots will be lined up. i was just saying go off the piston because it's an easier visual reference, especially after you have the timing cover back on.

Thanks for the info first time taking an engine apart. It doesn't seem as hard as I thought. Is there something I should check on the cylinder walls and pistons since I have the heads off? Also wondering if anything needs to be done to the lower half since the upper half is being replaced. Engine has 60K on it. Thanks for the help

dont you need to degree the cam when you put it in rather than just go by TDC?
