This question is regarding a cam swap only (no springs).

From what I read on Hotmustang331 swap, he did NOT remove the lifters/followers. I have read Bill's install on M D, which inluded springs, and he used took the followers off and compressed the lifters.

How many have swapped cams only by only removing the cam caps and what is the best method (does it really matter)?

Granted I have a 00GT and need to replace the cam gear, but that does not change the question posed in this thread.

Thanks

I didn't. I removed the old cam and repalced it with the new then bolted down the caps. Just be careful that you don't loose a rocker when you swap them out.

here we go-

Either way you will probably be fine. The most correct way (from what I understand) is to remove the cam cap bolts in the proper order about a turn at a time until the bolts are out. This way you ensure you dont stretch the cam caps. OR you could pop out the followers with a screw driver with the cam is at its base cycle and remove the bolts like normal. When you go back to install them you want to install the cam first, and tighten the cam caps in correct order to 89in lbs. Then you want to compress the lash adjusters in a vise and install them in the same pockets they came out of. This makes it a lot easier to slide the followers in when the cam is at its base cycle. This again, prevents the cam caps from stretching.

A lot of people just remove the cam and place the new cam in on top of the followers and lash adjusters. When I was looking for advice on my first cam install most said this was a big NO NO, but everyone that has done it this way had no problems.

also its important to remember that everything (lash adjusters, followers, cam caps, etc) all have to go back in the same exact order.

Been a while. Looking to get a few more confirmations from people that have changed their cam but only removed the caps and swapped cams (no lash adjusters, followers removed).

Thanks. Finally getting around to doing this.

Are you concerned with re installing them? It really only takes 30-45min longer to compress the lash adjuster and reinstall the followers.

They say if you reinstall the cam caps with the lash adjusters and followers installed you run the risk of stretching your cam caps.

People do it either way, so I would just do it which ever way you are most comfortable with. Once you get everything apart and see how it works in person, you will have a much more better perception of what needs to be done.

I would think it would change the torque values,89 in lbs is not much.and compressing down the springs while torquing could result in loose caps. I guess you slightly over toque them and then loosen and torque, but risk overstreching the bolt/pulling threads

you'll be fine doing it either way.......when I was in there I was putting in new heads so I had to swap alot of stuff over. But I can't imagine there being a possible problem with just doing the cam caps. If I were be doing it I'd do it that way. Though as someone mentioned above, provided you have a good way to compress the adjusters ( I used a vice) then it can be done real quick and painless.

Take down the head till you have to make that decision, then decide. I'm 99%sure you'll just end up doing the caps when you evaluate it.

hope that helps
