i am going to be rebuilding my top end soon. new heads, roller rockers, fresh gaskets, bolts etc etc. i was wondering how complex it is to remove and install a new cam and lifter set. do you have to pull the engine, or can you replace the cam by removing the rad, etc and all the front engine components? also does anyone have a link to a step by step cam installation? thanks.

just removing the radiator will give you enough clearence to slide the cam out. It is a very simple install, to me atleast

you need to slide the condensor up out of the way also. i tried getting a cam out last week and it hit the condensor before i was able to get it out.

Swapping a cam isn't that hard. The worst part is having to pull all of the accessories off of the front of the engine. It can be done in the car. I had to pull my radiator to do the swap but not my condenser iirc.

There are a couple of HCI swap write ups floating around stangnet so you might want to see if you can find one and read up. Pretty straight forward stuff for the most part.

thanks for the input. my ac condenser magically disappeared about the same time as all my smog control stuff. i was just standing there, ya know minding my own business and all of a sudden all that stuff just fell off and disappeared. really. does anyone have the link to 5spdGT's writeup. or can i look up his profile and find it?

This is somthing i don't know about, but at what point do the cam berings on these things wear out, is that somthing that happens often, if it does it may be worth it to take the motor out, i have done it and it really is not all that much more work that other described for the cam install, then you can replace the old motor mounts, and do a rebuild, rings and pistons, and all that stuff is usally under 1000 bucks from and good shop, i got mine for 700, minus the heads and other goodies, just my .02
