Cam suggestion

Hey everyone I am about to get my tax return and I am looking to get a H/C/I set up. Question, what cam can I get that wont screw with the computer? I was thinking of doing a trick flow street heat set up but not sure on the cam. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

(And I'm gettin a drop so no more 4x4 comments!)
 
About the only two that won't mess with the computer too much are the trickflow stage 1 or the steeda #19.. You'd be better off getting a more agressive cam and getting the car tuned, picking up ALOT more power with your new HCI combo
 
A custom Ground FTI Cam (Ed Curtis from FTI), Anderson Motorsport makes a couple of stock piston friendly NA cams (call rick anderson directly)

But, if you are going to do the whole trickflow kit, then going with their cam will be good.. It leaves a lil on the table, but is a good, streetable cam well matched to the combo
 
You can't beat those HCI combo packages for the money. Both the Trick Flow kit and the Holley kit are good. If you are on a tight budget I would just stick to the cam that comes in the kit. Then if you come up with some cash later, and you want more, do a port job on the heads, and swap to a custom camshaft.

Steeda #18 cam works pretty good with 1.7 rockers. I had good luck with one. I ran 12.99 @ 105 in my Fox with an 18 cam and Windsor Jr. heads on a stock tune. That was like 10 years ago. Back then most people just played with timing and fuel pressure.

Steeda cam sucks. Get a custom and tune if needed.

Why does it suck? I am not going to argue that a custom is not the best but there is a guy on another fourm that made 293rwhp 317rwtq with AFR 165's, #19,1.72 rr's, Motorsport intake and stock bottom end. 100k+ mile motor

Yes I know not all combos will make the same power. With that said that is the only #19, alu head combo I have seen. But I think we can both agree that what the above car made is very respectable for an OTS combo.

Having said that ... I won't go down that road :nono:

I can say this from what I've seen over the years from hanging
around on these boards :)

A good bit of the folk who did the TFS kit were not happy with
how the car behaved on the street and turned to a tune to
make things more acceptable

them out for the details

kinda soft on the low end :shrug:

I agree with turbogt from above :nice:

Pick a cam to make power
and
Tune the pcm to deal with drivability issues

Trying to kill both of those birds with the one stone of cam selection .......

Well ... You will compromise on both sides of the deal IMHO :(

Tuning is expensive. You can make decent power on a stock tune with a mild cam and decent heads. If money is an issue, you might as well just start small and have a decent ride.

Peak numbers are nice for bragging but hows the rest of the powerband from 2500 to 6000? With out even seeing it I already know: its WEAK down low and NOSEDIVES up top. Now combine that with the typical heavy sn95 car and the typical 3.55-3.73 gearing and you have a car that will be lucky to run 13.2 :) If you're gonna spend $1500 on a cylinder head, use a real cam don't be cheap. The cam puts the whole package together.

I only had one combo using the #19 cam and it was a blown 347 :(

After looking for the data ... I did remember ......

I've asked for dyno pulls using said cam before :nice:

however

I've gotten no info that I can use which will I feel is displayed in such a
fashion that allows me to keep any kind of accuracy :bang:

It is not all that easy to take a dyno pull and arrive at numerical numbers
from the chart :Word: don't ya know

Most of the time the charts are hard to read or crooked or stuff like that :fuss:

I can say this for sure :D

I do focus in on Street Applications
and
One of my main criteria I use to focus on is the torque curve

If it doesn't make 300#'s BEFORE 3K ... Its not in the "Top Notch" group

It goes without saying ;)
You can arrive at such a conclusion with just about any pull that is displayed
on a forum without going to too much trouble even if the chart is of
poor quality

I kinda think I've seen none ... Make that objective using said cam :shrug:

Now having said that ... If I have been mistaken :shrug:

I'm certainly up to making a recant about that info :D

As a rule of thumb ... I feel that is the tendency of said cam :)

Again ... If anybody has got some charts or numbers of a pull that would
be relevant to the application here in this thread

I do have #19 camshaft and people told me i would still need a tune. It is true that you need a tune no matter what kind of cam you use to get the maximum amount of power and great driveability.

I am using edelbrock heads and intake and steeda #19 cam. I still need a dyno & tune.

From what i have seen #19 cam is okay for daily driver or just mild mod street car. I am happy:) it's better then stock LOL
