CAM swap in a stock GT

For every one tuner that says that, there are 10 more that say different. The two biggest mods you can do for power without forced induction is LT headers and cams. Add an intake and it will be WELL worth it. Look at my sig. How many N/A 4.6's are breaking 300? Not too many. There are lots of people in the high 280's, low 290's with LT's and cams with an exhaust setup and intake. I guarantee you would hit atleast 270 with cams and headers as long as it is tuned. Since you want to do long tubes, you would need a new mid pipe anyway, so there ya go for freeing up the exhaust. Considering your at about 220 stock, that's atleast a 50hp increase.

Well i allready have the exhuast covered cept for the LT's. Why would he say not to waste my money if you get such an awesome gain from these two mods? I"ll prolly end up doing the LT's before the cams.

I only have 3.90s and a very safe tune. I wanted more low end so I went with the less duration cams. However, mine are blower cams. I have a pretty good torque curve.

yes only a few more ponies but you have much more aggressive cams.

My powerband is a little wider and longer than yours though. I think I have a problem with the car somewhere because they even said mine was a little low compared to others with the same setups. I am going back in 2 weeks for another tune and to find out whats tripping the check engine light and why. Also, not every dyno is the same so you cant compare too well otherwise.

Barnes and Noble will order it for you or you can order it right off of SHM's web page. You coming to the BBQ?
I may have to actually step foot in a book store, all hell's going to break loose now.

I have to attend my dad's fiance's b-day BBQ on Sat. at 2. But I may cut out early and fly out there. I'm going to see if there are any female friends available for the shindig.

very true you really cant compare dynos of cars on totally different setups and or conditions.

I take my car out to 6500 so there is plenty left in her ;).

I also have zero expirence with cams and dont know much about them. Being an auto I cant get LT's, but that wouldnt stop me from getting cams. Can someone point me in the right direction for cams based on the mods I have now? Im also thinking about a torque converter next summer if that makes a difference. Thanks guys.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I should look into getting gears first. I don't care too much for top end, I'm more of a torque kind of guy. Would 4.10's be good, or too much? I don't think I'll ever go supercharger or turbo, unless I ran into an extra $5,000 to spend. I don't see that happening.

For a completely stock GT, would you recommend 4.10's, or 3.90's? Could someone explain what the difference would be concerning the two? What is a stock GT's gear ratio? Thanks.

4.10's or 4.30's. ALOT of people are using 4.30's on daily driven stangs. It's not too hatefull for the rpms in naturally aspirated form. As I stated in another post, I would have gone 4.30's, but I plan on a cobra big bore stroker from VT sometime next year, so I couldnt use the 4.30's with that combo. She should make 350+/380+ at the wheels with that bottom end from what I hear. NATURALLY ASPIRATED. I like the idea all that power without forced induction. It's gonna make them stock 03/04 cobra boy's cry :D

can someone explain what does andersons cam tool is?
It holds the whole timing chain set up and cam sprockets in place so you don't have to mess with setting the time at all. Just remove the front cover, pull the valve covers and cam retainers ( think that's what they are called) off, unbolt the cams and slide them out. I have not done this yet, so their may be a few other things involved, but you get the jist of it.

Actually all you have to do is pull the valve covers off. You do not need to pull the front cover off or mess with the cam retainers. Just unbolt the cam sprocket and the cam caps, slide the sprocket forward and then pull up on the old cam. Installing is the opposite. When I did mine I did not even remove the coil packs or spark wires. Whole job took less than 2 hours with one break. Just have an extra set of hands to help with the job, but it is a piece of cake.

Anyone have a good set of instructions on how to install cams?
Check the latest issue of MM&FF...great write-up on the cam swap there.

If you ask me a 'mild' cam like the Comp XE268H for the up to 98 4.6's and the XE270AH for the 99+ are the best mod I've seen to date and ranks up there with a gear swap. They are pretty expensive and can get real expensive if you have a shop do it. If you are a do-it-yourselfer then you have it made. You may need a tune to get the idle right but overall you will wake up your car pretty good, especially the pre 99 cars.

Didn't know it was THAT easy. So how do you like you cams? Do you wish you went more aggressive, or do those do the trick? I'm looking at swaping my cams SOON and just don't know what cams to get. Did you notice your car pull better down low?

He hasn't stopped grinning if that says anything. He sure pulls the hell against me now. And it has a bad-ass lope at idle. :hail2: A more aggressive cam would require valve spring change and possibly some consequences with valve collapse so I would go with the 'milder' cam unless you are doing a complete build-up. With your mods I'd bet you would feel a great increase in power...probably close to a head swap.

Pardon my woody, but I can't contain myself. I think I'm going to order these cams. Do you know where he ordered them from model # and how much?

I am the one with the big grin on my face. The cams I have are the 268H from Comp Cams. They do have a very nice lope to it and it will make the motor scream on top end. They are very easy to do. Just have an extra set of hands to help out and that is it. I was very nervous doing it but Derek (drew1287) assured me there is nothing to it.

I ended up purchasing them from Summit. You can find them at other places but it was just pretty easy to go with them. Expect to pay around 500-600 for them. And for the installation do yourself. I do not think it is any harder than doing a mid-pipe exhaust installation. Now I just need to get Coramprat to get some to see how it pulls with his 4.10 gears.
