Cam swap/New dist gear?

I just installed my new comp cam in my 90 GT with 114K on it. The comp directions say to always install a new distributor gear. Is this absolutley necessary? Do you guys always use a new one when installing a new cam? Thanks!

I cant speak for anyone else but I have never had to change the distributor gear just for a cam swap. Unless you installed a roller cam in a non roller motro, then you would have to change it for sure. I suppose if it was showing any weird wear or something it would probably be an OK idea but I have never run into that. They are a total bitch to change too. I had to do it once to change out the pickup in a distributor and it sucked. I would buy a new distributor next time.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't remember seeing anything about it being a major issue in the magazines or online and didn't plan on changing it, but i stopped in my tracks when i read the install manual with the cam. I'll probably run it and just check it after a few hundred miles and make sure unless someone else pops up with a different answer for me.

I am not saying that it is definitely necessary to swap out that gear, but...

All gear sets will have a break in period where they get accustomed to eachother. Consider it a blind date. There will be extra noise during this time, as the gears are talking to each other. But just like most couples though, they won't talk much once they know each other.

But lame analogies aside, if there was an irregularity in the dist gear surface, then the gears may never quite mesh right leading to premature wear.

But like I said this may not be as big of a concern as it would be for a rear end gear set.

Cool, thanks for the replies. I'll just keep an eye on it for the first few weeks. I'm running the stock distributor and if i needed to swap the gear for sure i might just upgrade to a aftermarket distributor anyways.

Well keep in mind that the replacement gears are pretty cheap (about $35 if I remember right), and it would only take about an hour to pull the dist. and be done with it.

Still I have to admit that I do not know that it is necessary. If it turns out to be please post something here about it. I would like to know.

Yes, little baby 4.10's. They cost a little bit to have delivered but I hear it's worth it.

I think the 4.10s look like more like the dad (Cam gear)..

But has some distributor gear in the cheekbones... I see a good resemblance to grandma too LOL

I didnt put a new gear on mine when I put my new motor together. I would just look at the gear make sure its in good shape if it looks fine just use it if not then replace it.

Ok, update, called comp and they told me to just buy a stock cast iron gear and use that. What i want to know is is the stock gear iron or steel. The guys at comp are kinda quick with answering your questions and dont really talk to you, just spit out answers in my experiences. Just want to know 100% before i buy and swap. Thanks

Is this a roller cam?

I thought ALL roller cams had to have brass? Maybe not brass, but something softer than steel.

Yes, comp cams extreme energy 270 HR. From stock roller to this, cam gear is steel or iron, looks like steel. The cam tech told me to use anything besides bronze for a gear, but that seems like to general of a recomendation. MSD specks a steel gear fof the drop in distributor for the 5.0. Fosr says use a steel gear as well.
