Came home with a new commuter (that I f'd up on day 2....)

It's not perfect, but it'll be good enough.

Threw a wrench in the "color gets sprayed today" idea - had to run into Iowa City to pick up guide coat and more sand paper, so that ate a couple hours. And I'm starting 3rd shift tomorrow night, so I was in bed til 230. Been sanding for the last 3-4 hours, I'm almost done. Then I gotta let the dust settle. With any luck, I'll have it sprayed sometime overnight. So it won't be today for anyone but me (unless you work nights and stay up like I do....).

Almost midnight around these parts - just washed all of the dust off. Gonna give it a bit to dry before I go back to it again....

2 coats of black. Not horrible for the first time painting a car if I don't say so myself.

There are a couple spots where something settled in the paint, though I tacked it before I sprayed, so I have no idea where it came from. And there are a couple runs, otherwise I think it looks pretty decent. I used this cheap Amazon gun. I figure I'll get up tomorrow and knock the runs and debris out and give it one more coat to make sure everything is covered well before spraying clear. I'm not sure if that will get done later today or if it'll wait til Monday afternoon when I get up.

Sorry, not familiar with feetamo. In case this answers the question - it's urethane high build, urethane base coat, and it will be getting a few coats of clear later tonight before I have to go to work. Here's what I used:


I didn't spray an epoxy primer, which I probably should've. Total newb at this, didn't even occur to me that I'd need 2 different primers. Oh well, it'll be alright....

Exactly what I have to say about it! Besides, it's good practice for future projects - like my convertible or my 55 if I ever get started with it. And I might be able to repaint the Cobra should I get a hair up my ass to do it. I have at least 3 quarts of color left, and since they're both black.... I'll probably need more high build primer as I only have about 2-1/2 quarts, but it is what it is. And I'll remember to get epoxy primer next time! But I now have the equipment and the space to get it all done - that's one hell of change from a year ago and another major benefit I now have!


Just come back in the house after sanding the blemishes and shooting 2 more coats of color. The plan is to go back out in 2-3 hours and spray clear. I'm going to be switching guns and going with the Harbor Freight Black Widow - it has a bunch of positive reviews and videos, and my neighbor said it's a good gun. We'll see how I do with this end of it all....

3 coats of clear and only one major run that I see after a quick walk around. I'm done for the weekend. I'll likely go out and look at it again before I leave for work, but I don't intend to do anything with it til tomorrow.

Yep - flash times were 10-20 minutes for clear. So I was giving it about 15 minutes every time. The run/sag was probably my fault for holding the gun too long in that spot, or maybe I sprayed too much there. I attacked the car from the 3 sides, and there would be overlap on that corner for the back and the side, so in theory it could have 6 coats in that spot.

I went back out and took another look about 1/2 hour ago - there are a few minor imperfections like dust and maybe some minute fisheyes, and there was one more run/sag, though it's not nearly as noticeable as that one, so I have no plans on doing anything about it. Otherwise I quite impressed myself, it looks really good!
