Camshaft dowel

I am trying to put the camshaft timing gear on for a Comp Cams XE270HR-14 cam. The pin is in there, however, the essentric that holds the pin in seems to not sit flat on the surface of the gear itself. Can anyone comfirm that:

A. The dowel is too long
B. Its normal and ok to run like this

If you're running this in a 94-95 with EFI, lose the eccentric. It didn't come with one from the factory. Otherwise, you'll need to grind down the camshaft dowel, so the eccentric is flush with the sproket, or you may end up rubbing on the inside of the timing cover, if it'll fit behind it in the first place?

I wouldn't leave it like that. If you need the eccentric you'll have to grind the dowel pin a little shorter.

That is a strange looking "eccentric". All the ones I've seen, including the one on my '72 are round and offcentered. Got a picture of the front of it? I'm curious to see.

As said above, make sure it all fits flush, there are typically two dowels that come with camshafts - looks like you are needing the other. I can measure a dowel I have on a camshaft if you need measurements.

As Stranger stated, there are usually 2 pins. You need the shorter one.

Alright, well it is a 94-95. My personal opinion is that it should have one there as what would keep it from possibly wiggling its way out of there. The problem is, I didn't take this appart, so putting it back together makes it more troublesome. When I got the engine with the cam / head installed, the essentric was not used. I then began to tear down what he built up and then began inspecting the internal workings of the engine. When I put the cam timing chain back on, I was looking in the chiltons manual and it showed this part in there. I found this part in a baggie and figured it was suppose to go back on.

Are we under the consensisus that :

A. Its a 94-95 and no essentric needed
B. Get a shorter pin so that this essentric fits. I will get measurements of the pin if this is the case.

There's a picture of what the eccentric I am talking about looks like on my '72's motor. The fuel pump mounts to the timing cover and has an arm that the eccentric "pumps" to pull fuel from the tank and push it to the carb.

See how it is round? Does yours look different, from your pic above it looked like it was a tad different.

I'm just curious to know what sort of eccentric it is, never run across anything like that.

And again, I would ditch it, heck, it may rub your 94-95 timing cover with it on?

The Fox Mustangs still had the eccentric, even after they went to EFI. The SN95 models dropped it.

Yea you put the cam in, bolt on the thrust plate, make sure the cam dowl goes into the timing gear when you install the timing set, and put on the cam bolt. Thats really all there is to it.
