Camshaft thrust BEARING?

I've got something like that on my engine, but the bearing is attached to the timing chain gear instead of the cam retainer.

Basically what he told me is that he likes to put them in motors with a 'big' cam. He was recommending the XE274HR-12 with my combo and said I'd be fine with the stock thrust plate, but would probably be a good idea to go with a bearing. Anything larger like the XE284 he would definitely use one. I'm not sure what the logic is there but hey, why not.
 
I have one in mine, but I bought it from a local dealer for about 1/2 the price. However that was a year ago. Going to do a tear down this winter, will let you know how it held up.
 
i have seen roller cam bearings before, but not a roller thrust plate. that thing looks cool, but it seems like overkill unless you are building an all out race car. my builder didn't recommend one with my buildup ...

then again ... if you have the $$$, it can't hurt ... :shrug:

when it comes to the bottom end, i am a believer in doing it right the first time.
 
I was under the impression that the roller cam won't walk around as much. Usually you see these on flat-tappet cams, because of the lifter not sitting squarely on the lobe will attempt to push the cam out of the block a lot more.
 
From the advice I was given, when you are using BIG cams and the engine is loping, especially with the cam driven dizzy and oil pump the camshaft tends to walk more than normal, if you can keep your idle out of the lope, then its not so bad. I originally had an X303 cam, which is why I put in the roller thrust plate.
 
That seems to concur with the fact that the cam I had in my last combo similar to an E-303 created a lot of wear on the thrust plate in the short amount of time I had it. I've decided to go ahead and do it. I'll be calling the local builder to see if I can't get it cheaper through him.
