I don't think worse angles could have been shot of that motor. Get a couple more pics of the front and rear including the water pump (specifically the inlet/outlet). It looks like a 360/390.

assuming it hasn't been jacked with and is all original and due to the lack of finding the casting numbers i'd say it is a '70 or MAYBE a '71 302 but probably a '70.

i've come to this conclusion due to a number of things. mostly the valve covers and accessory brackets. Ford quit using that style of valve covers after the 70 model year also the brackets are 70 or newer the 69's used different style brackets. another thing i noticed was the wiring harness for the engine, the coil, coolant temp switch and oil pressure sender is the correct style for a 70 model, also it's a little hard to tell for sure but it looks like the oil pressure sending unit is a guage type and not an idiot light type so that leads me to beleive it is from a stang or a cougar as most other passenger cars in 70 had idiot lights, not all of them but a big chunk for sure.

and since you said it was supposedly in a 70 stang i'd have to say that is the original engine. of course without the casting numbers there is no way to be absolutely certain, that's just my best educated guess.

if you want to know for sure the block casting number will be on the block above the starter, you'll have to basically stand on your head to read them with the engine that close to the ground but that's the only way to know for sure.

if you want my advice though, i'd stay away from this one unless you have the money to have the entire block machined, it looks like it has been sitting outside for quite a while and is probably siezed up.

With those valve covers and the 2V it does look to be about a 1970 engine.

Are looking at the same pictures we're looking at? Just bustin' on ya'.

I hadn't noticed you were in Sweden. If the engine is in Sweden already, it may have received some things a little different than we got here in the US. I'm thinking it may have got screw in freeze plugs because it was an export engine. They do crazy thigns like that sometimes.

This is basically what I remember of the 390 I had in my Ranger. It looked pretty much like this one.

Can't see the heads, headers, water pump, or anything else other than the top of the intake on the picture posted.

390 = FE Right? FE's have part of the intake manifold under the valve cover. In the pic of the red 289/302 you can see the whole intake manifold. No part if it is under the vavle cover.

Also the shape of the valve cover is different. The 390 valve cover is kinda square on the ends, while the Windsor is trapizoidal....sorta.

no, the engine you have is definitely a 302, the pic posted by daggar is of a 390 fe engine. 2 completely different animals. your engine appears to a 70 model 302, it is definitely no earlier than 70 as they changed the water pump outlet to the driver side in 1970 and the engine you posted has the driver side water pump outlet. ford quit using that style of valve cover after the 70 model year but some leftovers made it into the 71 model year. so the engine you posted is either a 70 or possiblya 71 302. if anyone tells you it is anything other than 302 (possibly 289) they have no clue what they are talking about

Most people seem to vote for a 302 from 70. Since the engeneering number seemes to be wrong/changed/not complete: Where exactly is the location of the number we need to identify the engine?

the casting number you are looking for is located on the block above the starter mounting locationif it is a 70 model block it the casting number will start with a D0OE, it is also possible for a 70 model engine to have a 69 block casting if that is the case it wil start with a C9OE.
