I'm going to replace the valve seals in the SVO and planned on doing it without pulling the head. I dont want to go buying more tools just yet and already have this this compressor. Will it work?

I did a search and found no pictures of what I need.

Also, will I need to remove the cam to do this?

No, it won't be able to grab the valve spring since there's a metal "bucket" in the way. Do a google search for OTC tools. Look for an OHC valve spring compressor. They're about $40-$50 depending on whare you get it. Don't forget you'll also need the fitting to pressurize the cylinder to hold the valves up. I'd hate to see you remove a set of retainers and watch the valve stem disappear out of site with a little clunk as it hits a piston thats at BDC. Then you'll be pulling the head(and your hair ). It's just a fitting that threads into the spark plug hole and allows you to hook an air line to it to hold pressure while you work.

Is the "bucket" like a spring cup or seat? I've seen a few 2.3 head pics and never noticed them.

No worries on the valves falling in. I can use the fittings off my compression gage or the "rope" method.

I might as well get a compressor online. ALL the parts stores(and staff) around here(quite a few) are so incredibly retarded that the only part they could find was a VC gasket. Like stem seals and intake gaskets are made of unobtanium or something .

SPRING CUP!! I couldn't think of the name to save my life last night. Looks like you've got the valve thing figured out too. I tried to use that compressor on mine when I changed seals with the head off the car. I ended up taking the deal off the end and tacking it to a c-clamp. It wasn't pretty and it got a little scary at times trying to hold everything together without getting a spring in the face but I managed to get it done.

LOL at the parts store horror. I quit a part time, extra money job at Auto Zone because I spent more time helping the employees than I did the customers. I don't know everything off the top of my head, but I know where to find the answer and often times it wasn't on the terminal screen on the counter. Anymore I look up the part online, get a part number and take it to the store. When they start asking for make and model I stop them and tell them to get me this part number. Sometimes it works.

Why not make your own? Very easy to do, cheap and works like a charm. Read on....................

HOMEMADE VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR
By Jeff Korn
This valve spring compressor can be used with the head on the engine or off. Even if it is necessary to buy the parts, total cost should be under $5, and many people may have the parts lying around the garage. Assembly only takes ½ hour or so. With this tool, I can remove all eight cam followers in under five minutes.

Construction: Get two pieces of one inch by 1/8 inch steel bar stock, each 12 to 15 inches long. The exact length is not important. If you have access to welding equipment, also get two pieces of the same dimension bar stock about two inches long. If you don’t have access to welding equipment, get two blocks of wood one inch by one inch by about two inches, and four 1½ inch long bolts with nuts. Lay the two long pieces of bar stock parallel to each other, and weld the two short pieces of bar stock between the long pieces as shown in the figure so the long pieces are one inch apart. If you don’t have access to welding equipment, position the two wood blocks between the long pieces of bar stock, and drill two holes through one piece of bar stock, the wood block, and the other piece of bar stock. Bolt together with the bolts. Repeat for the other wood block.

Note the bar stock pieces on the left end of the tool in the figure is slightly splayed, and the top edges of the bar stock are ground down slightly. This end is inserted over the top of the valve retainer, and under the camshaft, with one side on each side of the cam lobe. Simply pushing down on the other end of the tool will compress the valve spring.
