Can T-5 handle 400 hp?

No T-5 will ever handle what that Toploader will. As for if any T-5 will, in my opinion, that's going to depend on how much torque you're talking about, not the HP rating. It's the sudden application of torque, combined with too much traction and no slippage on the clutch's part, that is the undoing of T-5's.

I disagree somewhat. Had terrible luck with toploaders surviving the up and down shifts of road racing. Linkage adjustments, broken tail housing, extremely difficult to line up with flywheel, horrible venting and gears not lasting. Having said that..............NASCAR used the toploader for years so there is some merit if a lot of shifting is not used.

Ain't had no issues with the T-5.

Good Luck,

I'm one of the freaks that hasn't broken it yet. Original 156,000 miles with over 100 5500-6000 rpm launches on the slicks. I don't power shift it. Got a TKO for the vert and the T-5 is going in the 65.

I think you nailed it!

About the only one that will survive power shifting on a regular basis is the Jerico!

The same way you would do it in any other car. its only 4 bolts. Sometimes though on the classic it doesn't line up with the shifter hole that well so you may need to trim the hole to access the bolts. I just installed it before I put the tranny in.

Yeah, but the shift seems farther forward on the classics that I would think a very short throw shifter like I had in my 5.0 would be damn hard to reach. :)

I took my old 3 speed shifter and cut the bottom/top of it. Took the top and bottom off the one that came with the short throw and welded them to the 3 speed middle. Now I have a short throw that looks stockish. I have a T-handle with my line lock button on it. If you want it to look stock just leave the top on the 4 speed shifter and cut the bottom off and replace it with the short throws.

Usually its the third gear that breaks, not the first (at least from what I read).

A TKO will require tunnel mods to do it right. I tried mine without mods first and it looked bad. Engine set at 6 degrees. Header collectors were 2" lower. I ended up cutting the tunnel and raising it 1 1/2 inch.

T5 stuff

I have had very good results with the T5Z with upgrading the coutergear stabilizer with this piece to control the side forces of the gears.

The stock piece is on the right and is a stamped piece. The other is a CNC piece.

If you go with a T5 I would put one of these.

Things that were bad or going bad in my T5 were the 3-4 shift fork was cracked, 1-2 slider whas shot and though 2nd gear would have probably been fine, seeing the slider was new I replaced 2nd too because the dog teeth were kind of flattened and I wanted a good mating surface. The tranny whined in 2nd and 3rd gear and the 1st gear synchro was shot i think(hard to get into first at a dead stop from N). Granted it had 130K on it and I was a little rough for the last 1000 miles since my H/I/C, you can buy upgraded parts to make up for some of its weaknesses but you can't get around the fact that its a T5... Unless you upgrade to a gforce.
