Cannot get cleveland to spline

make sure the torque converter is fully installed in the trans. sometimes it doesnt engauge the pump drive, and if it doesnt the converter isnt fully seated and will prevent the trans and engine from properly mating.

Sounds to me like he's bolted the converter onto the flexplate, then trying to mate the engine onto the transmission. If that's the case, you're playing with fire here. Good way to break the front pump gear.

Thats not how you do it? If I take the converter off and put that on the shaft and then put the engine in, how do i get to the bolts? also should the converter be filled or does the tranny do that? this is my first time with an automatic

Nope. You should get 3 distinct clunks as you rotate the convertor onto the trans. If it is not seated correctly and you uise the bolts to tighten the trans to engine, good bye tranny. Then you bump the starter over and catch the flexplate to convertor bolts one at a time.
You did the right thing posting before you ate your trans.

The pump gear on C4's are fragile and are easily broken this way. Not sure about the FMX's though, but I wouldn't try it. Install the converter into the front of the trans first, making sure it's seated all the way, then mate the engine to the trans. Once you rotate the crank and line up the converter studs to the holes in the flexplate, they'll poke thru enough to get the nuts started.

One other thing I've found is that you REALLY want the converter end of the transmission to be up higher than the tailhousing. Orient the engine so that you can point the transmission up into it. If the converter end of the tranny is lower than the tailhousing, the converter can easily slip forward slightly out of the tranny. This really sucks, because you have to pull everything apart YET AGAIN and get the converter back all the way on the front of the tranny.
