Car Alarm Trick

Ok so I've heard this rumor going around (through crappy chain letters on e-mail) that goes like this:

"If you lock your keys in your car, all you need to do is use your cell phone, call your house, have someone there take your spare keys (with spare alarm clicker) and have them hit the unlock button INTO the phone, while you hold your cell phone close to the car door at the same time. And the signal is supposed to transmitt through the phones and unlock your car"



Well of course there are tons or testimonials aftewards in the chain letter like: "Yeah i tried it, and it worked!!!" So my friend locked her keys in her car last weekend, and i told her to try it. She goes: "is that really going to work? Or am i just going to look stupid doing this?" I was like: well hopefully both

Anyway, it ended up NOT working. So....wtf? Anyone seen this chain letter before, or perhaps the dynamics behind the method. Clearly it didn't work for her and her Dodge Neon, but she thinks that batteries on the spare remote might have been dead, so then again I dont know. Let me know what you think.

Speaker transmitt in the kHz range, wireless remotes tramsmitt in the MHz range. So thier is no way this could work. The phone on the transmitt end cant even pick up the signals comming from the remote, and the cell phone on the recieve end could not produce the remotes signal.

I know that it IS possible for cell phones to pick up and transfer outside frequencies, but don't know if it will work for this particular application.

(1) Tell me you really locked your keys in the car in order to test it???!!!!


(2) The cell phone operates inside the range of human hearing which is 20-20k Hz. When I push the remote I don't hear anything. Therefore I wouldn't think that would work.

Cell phone as a radio receiver/transmitter - ? No, no, no - this doesn't work...at least not yet. The technology is certainly available, there has just not been a need or a market for this.
If you simply think about it, it obviously won't work. A cell phone, in it's native mode (being used AS A CELL PHONE), transmits sound waves. Your wireless remote transmits radio frequency. Your car doesn't HEAR the wireless remote.

The only time I have locked my keys in my car was when I had my cobra.I had a laundry basket in the pass. seat and when the door shut, it tipped onto the power doorlock button.So, with spare remote in hand, I had to rock the car back and forth to tip the basket over.I had to time it just right between rocking the car, hitting the button, and pulling on the handle.Luckily no one was watching

good one... the only time i ever locked my keys in my car was the first time i got gas after getting the alarm put it.. it had the damn passive arm.. that 60 seconds after you shut the car off... i'm standing there pumping gas.. it goes beep.. and locks the doors.. then i looked like this

while the technology exists to do this with cell phones, there's no point and it would just make stuff more expensive for a relatively useless option.

Dont newer cars use infrared to communicate with the car?
Most cell phones have infrared ports too, many are even blue tooth compatible...

I dont see why you couldnt transfer the infrared signal across phones. Just need simple software on the phone to recognize the infrared signal from the key and to save it as a file that can be played back thru infrared.
