I have a 1988 Mustang GT with mass air conversion. My car has a functional ram air hood from Cervini's called the 2.5" Stormin Normin hood. My car also has a BBK 70 mm throttle body and Cobra Intake. Anyways, I hooked up a code scanner for OBDI car computers. I scanned it with "key on and engine off". I received a "81" code. The manual for the scanner says that the code means the following:

"Air diverter solenoid fault, intake air control circuit fault / air injector diverter"

What does this mean? What should I fix or replace to correct this problem?

By the way, the car works fine, but sometimes shuts of when the air conditioner is on and I shift into park. Information greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That is a code for the smog pump IIRC. Seems to me it is the secondary divertor valve. It is buried behind the pass fender as I recall.

Jrichker has a nice write up about this code and how to test it, etc.

Good luck.

Code 81 – Secondary Air Injection Diverter Solenoid failure AM2. The solenoid valve located on the back side of the passenger side wheel well is not functional. Possible bad wiring, bad connections, missing or defective solenoid valve. Check the solenoid valve for +12 volts at the Red wire and look for the Lt Green/Black wire to switch from +12 volts to 1 volt or less. The computer controls the valve by providing a ground path on the LT Green/Black wire for the solenoid valve.

NO way.

See Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control 1988-1993 by Charles Probst :ISBN 0-8376-0301-3. for Ford EFI help. When you know how it works, troubleshooting is much simpler.

It's about $20 from Borders.com see http://www.amazon.com/ . Select boo...very good, and I found it to be very helpful.
