Car idiling weird....

I checked the search feature and didnt really see anything that helped me, but if there is something I missed, I apologize. Anyway, my car is idiling really crappy right now, chugging in 1st gear from around 300 RPM up to about 1200 RPM. I'll be driving in 2nd and slow down to come to a stop, shift into 1st and it the RPM will go to around 1200 and then just drop, the car stalling. I've had this problem before, but only briefly and it went away. I've heard that it could be something to do with the pollution controls but im not sure. Anyone have any idea what it could be and what could fix it? My car is an '87 GT, 5.0 HO. Thanks, any help greatly appreciated!

It does sound like your EGR is stuck open. It also could be othe things. Make sure the IAC and TB is clean, if that's not it then pull off the EGR and be sure it's clean or maby replace it if it's old.
