Car is back from bodyshop finally

He did the qaurters, rockers, and roof. It`s ready for block sanding number 1 with hi build polyester primer on it. I had him weld up the seam between the rocker and quarter panel for a smoother look, I look forward to any comments anyone may have.

I like the welded up body line. Looks like a little more fitting on that trunk lid. I had to do SOOO much work to my lid, not sure who made it, but it was all out of whack, but it was all just removing material and not adding, so it wasnt too bad of a job. You are going to have some popeye forearms when you get done sanding on that baby before paint. What color are you thinking about?

Looks good from here. I would block with 80 on a long board than if it is straight block with 180 and than prime again.

Since you are going for that smooth look I would have bonded the end caps like we did on this 65.

I`m just glad to have it back home for now.

I wanted to do a Shelby Hertz GT-350H clone, but I cant decide on the colors yet. My wife ruled out the black with gold stripes, so I`m open to sugestions. I really like the dark moss green that rusty is putting on the shelby in the other thread, I may try and run with that if I can get the body straight enough.

Yes the trunk lid worries me, but I`ll power thru it somehow.

My body man refused to bond the end caps.

He said it would not last but a few years and it would start cracking.

I`m the guy that called you couple days ago Rusty, about the quarters.....

Anyway just glad to have car back under my control.

I knew it was you.

I painted that car about 4 years ago and he drives it to shows all the time and no cracks. Last year at a show with over 150 cars he got the best paint award. Car still looks wet like it was painted yesterday.

Think I might bondo my rear end caps. I was just talking to my dad the other day about that, and said Why did they make it that way?? Looks good smooth and definitely love that paint color.

Theres no real flex point there for the quarter extensions to crack...especially if you do some frame ties. If they spanned the length of the entire rear end then there might be an issue, but bonding those small pieces in, no problem, see the above for proof. I WAS going to do that with mine, but I got lazy and thought that one day I might want to go back with a flat decklid sooo I didnt. I'm about ready to wring my body mans neck, he's telling me "one more week" for 3 months now. The good news is, were still on budget...for now.

Ok, following Rusty`s advice on starting with 80.

Here is what i got.

Soft-Sanders

Got an 11 inch set from them, and a 24 inch block that will have sandpaper on both sides, 80 on one and 150 on the other, thats my long block. Salesman said with paper on both sides of the block it would be stiff as a board, we`ll see.

Anyone that has used these please tell me how well they work.

Also got 7 peice Durablock set, which looks pretty junky to me, I may send them back.

I use the "junky" blocks just about every day. I buy rolls of 2 3/4" sticky paper in 80, 180 and 320. I use both of the 11 blocks to get the panels straight and the round block around the wheelwells and other curved areas.

Soft sander looks good if you were blocking out a 40 Ford and may work in some areas but you want stiff blocks on the top of the fenders, doors, quarters and roof.

I have never seen the soft sanders before. You can try the soft sanders on the curves. I use the narrow 11" block on some curves and I also use different diameter pvc pipe cut to different lengths. I don't have any long soft blocks. I don't know what kind of polyester primer they used. I use Slick Sand and it sands a lighter color so it is easy to see your low spots and high spots since I spray black epoxy before the gray Slick Sand.

I`ve never done this before, but the soft sanders won an award at sema 2010 so I thought I mite give them a try, it`s only $40 for the 11 inch set, and it`s got what I assume are going to be some "must haves" in my body work box.

He used a dark grey epoxy before the primer, so I think it`ll show up pretty good.
