I just finished my T-5Z swap yesterday and love it . Its like a whole different car . The only problem I have now is its running hot . It never did this with the AOD . I cant see any correlation between the two . Not sure why the T-5 would make it overheat .

I changed the thermostat today and put in some fresh coolant . Still does it . Not right away . only after about 15-20 min of driving it will be fine until then , then just starts steadily climbing up to about 2 dashes from the top of the guage (not sure what temp that is) then I just park it .

Do you think it is coincidance that it is now running hotter with the t-5?

I'm going to replace the fan clutch and go from there .

any thoughts?

If it indicates hot while you have been cruisin at speed (freeway, for instance), the fan would not be near the top of my list.

I gotta say that I would put a mech gauge on there in case something wiring-wise got bumped while doing the swap (pedals, etc) and that you really are not running hot.

Good luck.

Overheating or running hotter than usual?

If it truly is overheating, then just to cover the basics, what did you do with the auto trans fluid cooling lines that went to the radiatior?

If running hotter, than like said above, check to make sure you did not disconnect or damage and ground wires. I'm sure you pulled the gauge cluster out and moved the speedo cable over, and there is a ground wire on the firewall close to where the throttle and speedo cable run through, check that out.

A poor/bad ground will not allow the gauges to work properly.

I would get another gauge, So you can eliminate it either it is really getting to hot or the gauge in the car is just off..

But he said it happened after the AOD to T5 conversion, so it would be logical to assume the gauge all the sudden went bad. The swap involves dealing with the gauge cluster, getting under the dash, etc.. moving things around at the firewall, which really points to an issue with that.

WAGs:

Burp the cooling system
Top off the tranny cooling portion of your rad with fluid then cap
If you moved the rad at all, ensure that it's sitting in the brackets correctly (mine is picky about the angle it meets the air coming in from the front)

I got the aftermarket guage installed today and it is in fact running hot . I started it up and let it idle for a good 20-30 minutes in the driveway , never got above 190* . As soon as I start driving it the temp slowly starts to climb and doesnt stop , once it got above 235* I nursed her home and parked it .

I'm still at a loss as to why this would happen after the T-5 swap , maybe it is pure coincidence .

I checked the oil , no coolant and vice versa . no smoke out the tailpipes and no leaks . the heater blows hot and no leaks from the heater core .

I capped off the holes in the radiator where the tranny lines were .

I guess I will change the water pump out and upgrade the radiator to a 3-core .

any other thoughts?

When I first started with Mustangs I did an Aod to t5 conversion. Being new to it I missed a few things on the install. The company that sold me the kit gave me a bad tranny mount which failed and let the engine and tranny shift. When this happend the fan was pinched and would stop working. Sounds stupid and I was pissed cause it kept happening and it took 2 days to figure it out. I ended up spinning a few bearings and having to replace the whole thing. Might not be whats going on with you but it's worth checking.

Prob had to do with the style of driving after the swap.

With the AOD the engine never really revs as high and always upshifts soon. Also, shifts are soft.

When you upgraded to a 5-spd, now you are revving higher and faster and it might have been just enough to finally kill the WP>

just a thought
