Note that this physics argument is over an imperfect situation. In theory once you remove the source of energy that is accelerating an object, the velocity of the object will cease to increase and remain constant until a force acts upon the object to speed it up/down or change direction of motion.

The car on the other hand has a suspention and a bunch of other things that can store energy and actually allow acceleration of the car to continue (however slightly) for a short time when the clutch is pushed in. This may explain why you see an increase in speed when the clutch is pushed in. Could also be a good tail wind.

Think about it. If an object keeps accelerating after the force causing the acceleration is removed, the momentum of the object would keep on increasing and NASA would have alot of their problems solved because now they would only need to set a spacecraft in motion and shut off the engines and watch it go faster and faster for free.

The car is an imperfect object in a imperfect situation. The physics theory being discussed here is correct. Perhaps the reason the car keeps accelerating after the clutch is pushed in is due to the suspension releasing some stored energy and thus allowing the car to increase in velocity, however slight, for a short amount of time. What about the grade of the road, tail winds, ...

Hmm, well I think it will to an extent. Otehrwise you would be SLAMMED into your steering wheel as soon as you let off the gas, of when you depressed the clutch to shift. But there is no such feeling when you shift. The car is in a trend off gaining speed, and that trend carries over until is is over thrown by outside forces. Most of the time you cant see this, and in a 99GT @ 98MPH it will almost instantly be overcome.

You can't have acceleration unless you have a force applying it! I also don't what to get into Kinetic motion equations! go to College and take some physics courses! like me!I am callingcrapola

So should we call this the 1BADAOD perpetual motion theory?

Nicely stated and quite correct.
Still, the car in the original post says it went 103 in his sig. I think the car stops at 98 now so he won't kill himself or other innocent people.

correction, he won't kill himself or other innocent people going faster than 98mph

Anyone think it may just be a poorly calibrated speedometer. The one at the track is more than likely right and his may be off. Ford speedometers are known for that. It may shut down when his reads 98, but he is actually going a little faster.

Actually, the ones at the track are not that acurate to true mph, as they take an average time across the last two sensors, instead of clocking actual speed at the finish line.. Not that it really makes a difference since eveybody uses the same standard.

We're working on it...amnit: However, if we get there it would only work in a vacuum, not in this guys cold fusion mobile. Too much friction down here.

What is he was driving on a conveyor belt that moved in the opposite direction at a speed matched to his forward speed? Would anyone hear him crash?

there are very few, very obvious answers to the time in his sig vs the speedo not showing past 98:

1) he lied

2) the speedo is off (none are perfect, EASILY by 5mph)

2) he posted an NHRA altitude corrected time in his sig. 103 mph vs "98" on the speedo is very possible.

what the hell is with the physics debate anyway? you cant debate LAWS of physics!

Every body perseveres in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a right line, unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed thereon.

No revs = no acceleration. Fact. The car will immediatelly begin to slow down without power being applied due to linear resistance of the wind and rotational resistance of the wheels on the ground. Watch ANY in-car video, during normal shifting gear-changes the speedo immediately stops moving as the tach drops due to clutch engagement. If your speedo disagrees, your instruments are malfunctioning.

Bring it to the Ford dealer and have one of their guys look for a speed governor. It'll probably cost you 50 bucks, but it's much better than having to scroll past all this crap to find an answer.

The time in the sig is supposedly "corrected". The speedo is correct along with the tach (car showed that on dyno). The car shuts down at 98 right around 5300 RPM in 3rd and thats on or off the bottle.

I have taken the car to ford and had NO LUCK. Thats including clearing the computer and having it reflashed with an update. I have pulled aprt the console and checked under the car around the tranny for any modules. Even checked behind the gauge cluster and found NOTHING. I have talked to Granatelli and Diablo directly and niether have got an answer except for a possable speed limiting module installed by the rental company that may have previously owned the car.

I have thought about getting a carfax and seeing what company owned than car. But, than I'm figring they won't tell what they do to it and only charge me to take it off. Also, I even talked to Ford (tech line) and they don't have a clue if rental car companies do anything to limit the speed. The only answer I get from them is "its possable".

Call the rental company and ask them.
