I'm asking cause a local guy told me to go carbed to deal with less crap. I want to build a 500+ n/a combo with either a 393/408/418, not sure yet. He said that the carb was less hassle, is it true? How hard is it to tune something completely manually?

Here we go again. 500+hp on a 393 or 408 with a vic jr or super vic and 850 holley is simple IMO, but I been down that road before. How hard is it? Not really hard at all. Get a 19 dollar book on how holleys work.

More to the point of carb vs efi than if 500 is attainable? I know it can be done, but what is "better"? Better yet, pros and cons of each?

If i had the cash i would, but only because i'd go turbo with EFI and not with a carb. With a carb i'd go roots supercharger.

So you're saying that it's less hassle and bs to get a modded carbed car running right than it is to get a modded EFI set up?

There's a trade off...

IF you have carb tuning knowledge, you'll make more power and make it cheaper with a carb.

If you know NOTHING about carbs, but have a fat wallet, then EFI will be easier.

They both require tuning once you build them, but the carb can be done yourself. The EFI can be also but then that also requires more tuning software and hence more money.

Carb = user friendly if you take the time to learn
EFI = wallet hungry but more efficient

IMO they both have the same power making possibilities in the hands of a capable builder/tuner. My point was that if i were going with a turbo i would choose EFI for the computer management since you can make a turbo car super streetable with GOBS of power. You can do the same with a carb but IMO it's not quite as safe and you have to use a carb-hat which i kinda don't like. My main love of carbs is they're amazingly technological while still being really really simple at the same time, and i can tune it myself and it's cheaper. Also when i go to do something like swap intakes, i don't have all that BS to get through. And when i mod my car i don't have to fool with getting everything else to match it...i just jet the carb and turn a few screws and it's ready to rock.

Guess I'm leaning more towards carb. I mean, I haven't heard anything scary to keep me away, everything takes time to learn so there's no big concern there. It's cheaper, less hassle, more user friendly, why not? And if it's easier than working the damn Tweecer, I'll be fine.
