Carbon fiber hood

Really I've heard good things. Is it a older hood?

Im not sure, but from the looks of it its just simple stress cracks from rock chips, and i had to sand a healthy layer of paint off and it went all the way to the fiber. The stress cracks at the mounting brackets is what concerns me. As far as the finish, it looks like **** on the under side. Its my favorite shaped cowl by far though. I've heard and seen good things from tru-fiber. My buddy is a dealer and the hood looks 10x what my harwood looks like and i think he said something around $260 is what he would sell them to me for, im sure its not hard to get the same deal.

How light did you get your steel hood when you cut it up? I was just looking at it and was thinking maybe I could get enough off of it like Jeff suggested. Just not sure if it would be to flimsy. Car will trap good mph.

Not a whole lot man, there is even a 16" hole cut in the hood for a round air filter and its still ****in heavy. I junked it since thats how it came on the car. The harwood was the cheapest option i could find since the lady wanted a cowl hood.

Dont wanna sound stupid but anywhere near 25 lbs? Sounds like it is going to cost me somewhere between $650-1000 to get a hood on my car that wont look like **** with the dzus fittings. If I could gut the stock hood to get it down to a weight around there, could put the money into front brakes which would be around 35-40 lbs off the front and less rotating mass. Thoughts?

the feather carbon we had layed in place on bobs car looked well built and had bracing built into it to keep it stiff. cant think of anyone off the top of my head who runs them other then chris at FMM.

the cirvinis 6" extended that was on the coupe i think was around 50lbs. (or alteast felt like it) after we cut it back and cut everything out of it we could its not to bad but its cracking from all the movement now.

Its just on YB Ive read enough bad about feather carbon to make me not really want to even think about going with them. People werent getting their hoods for 3 months and only got them when the said they were going to call their credit card company to get the charge back. Then when they got them they fit like ****, one guy said the hood was to short in the back by 1". But your saying it was a quality hood the one you saw? Maybe it was just a rough time in production who knows.

Im all for upgrading brakes over the hood, less rotating mass will do more for your times then losing the hood. Could probably save around 5-7lbs by switching to a aluminum radiator. Aluminum drop spindles will cut a **** load of weight too.

I'll weigh the stock hood later in the day when i have a chance, but i can tell you its no where near 25lbs, more like 35lbs.

Its got the rad. already. Damn, sounds like I was shooting high. That would be great if you could weigh it, if its not to big of a deal maybe a couple pictures to so I could see how much was actually removed.

Thats what I am afraid of. I dont know if it will be to flimsy at speed which makes me a bit nervous. Ill say the stuff I can think off off the top of my head:

Alum Heads
elbow intake
alum rad
no front bumper or supports
no rear bumper replaced with chute mount
both doors gutted, crash bars removed
all hvac is gone including the heater box
whole center console
everything for the e brake including handle
rear seats gone
drivers and pass are corbeau forza's
bogart d-10's front and back. Ds2 front tires and 28x10.5
engine splash guards gone
front and rear sway bar gone
battery in the trunk
all interior insulation is gone
dogbone gone
bullet mufflers that end at the rear axle
spool in the rear
tubular k member and front coil overs
all AC junk is gone
PS gone
Manual rack
all emissions gone
spare, jack, partical board crap is gone
Prob 10 lbs of random bolts and screws that were unneeded as stuff was removed.

Added weight:
blower with brackets etc.
front mount intercooler and all tubing (alum)
dart block
10 pt cage that is mild steel. Cutting this out and replacing with a CM 10 point.
TH400 with lines, cooler, shifter etc

Still to remove:
Cutting out everything behind the sail panels
Roof support
Get a little hole saw happy
Anything else I can think of

Thats all I can think of at the moment. PW PL are staying, as is the radio with the two rear speakers. Hoping to get it to around 2800 lbs for the spring. It was 3090 last year including the 150ish lbs I removed between the last two days. So a reasonable guess is its at 2940, steel hood, stock brakes and the other stuff I mentioned is coming out. So it should be around 2850 with the items I know will be removed or swapped out for lighter pieces. Clearly those are close but still ballpark figures.

yea it fit great when we layed it on. had a brace along the inside molded in. would have needed some trimming along the back by the windshield and the cowl panel. but thats nothing major.

PM fastmover over there he's the one that had the hood. we layed on...

Did you remember all the **** under the fenders? I just realized i forgot to remove that stuff, bracket for the wipers, remove an excess wiring, you could do fiberglass fenders, door skins, hatch, etc. Im suprised your car is so heavy then again the dart and blower arent light additions either. What about a sheet metal rear end? Aluminum drive shaft?

Alright, i weighed the stock hood and have pics

I also weighed a 28" piece of the support,(buyer was so kind to include it in case i wanted the "fix" the stock hood) And it weighed about half a pound. So its possible to remove another 5-8lbs i think, but the hood is FLIMSY, I could hear it oil canning just picking it up to put it on the scale.

Hope that helps, im not sure how far jeff was talking about gutting it, but I would leave at least the front and rear portions.

Oh yea wiper junk is gone. I wanna try to stay all steel but the hood for now I think. I thought it was heavy myself then I started adding it up. I have a denny's everything proof driveshaft, its not light but chances are it wont be breaking. The th400 has a easy 50 lbs on a T5 itself. The block is 60 lbs more then a stocker. Blower with intercooler piping bov etc is prob a hefty 80 lbs so just that stuff there is almost 200 lbs and thats going light with everything. Basicly my goal putting the actual weight numbers aside is getting it as light as I can keeping it a street car and not spending crazy money.

Thanks a lot for weighing that hood, I owe you. Probably could get down to around 30 lbs like you said. Cutting out everything besides the skeleton on the way outside. But the flimsy part is what is bothering me the most. If its not a problem I would probably just do that. The roughly 10 lbs more from a aftermarket hood I would get wouldnt be worth the cost to me. There is a local carbon hood on craigslist that Jeff mentioned that I am looking into. If I can get it for reasonable I might pick it up.

It might be possible to get it to 25-30lbs but the hood still has the bracing along the edges and the whole hood is wobbly already. Maybe JB weld some wood bars to it afterwards? Lol

I dunno if i'd want that on a 9sec car. I'd buy a fiber glass hood and cut out the underside lining in the center. Obviously more prone to cracking if someone/thing presses on it but it also wont flap around either. And will be half the weight of a gutted hood.

Forgot to txt u back josh, I dont think Bills hood is the one on CL. I do think its that VIS racing brand and when i saw it the quality looked pretty good. I just txted him about it, but the kid is hard to get ahold of so ill let you know if i hear back from him
