Cast iron or billet steel timing set?

I'm looking at a new Ford Racing timing chain set. They list a cast iron one and a billet steel. I figure the steel set would be better, and it's only slightly more money. Is it a direct replacement? I thought I read that the billet gears require a hardened cam retainer plate with a roller bearing? Any thoughts?

Ok,the "billet" steel timing chain set is not billet on both, just the lower crank gear is,the cam gear is "machined cast steel".

And Im pretty sure the steel chain comes with the steel retianer,if not you can order one there like $12-15.

My Rollmaster billet timing set came with the roller thrust bearing with it...i used the stock retainer plate...

Good Luck!

Either will do the job just fine, new is better than old...

The Ford Racing web site says to use their hardened roller thrust plate with the steel timing set. The part # is M-6269-A351, and it's $40 from Summit. I might just stick with cast iron, my last one held up fine
