It seems like cat back's are ridiculously expensive. Is it worth it to have the extra 1/4". If not, I could just weld in some mufflers and put some tips on it.

Exhaust threads are usually focused around ... NOISE

Of course ... We always want to gain ... More POWER

I won't even get into the noise thing

We all have our idea of what sounds ... Good or Bad

As for power ... and ... More specifically

A mod that yields good power for the buck spent

Exhaust mods suck

A catback on a stock or bolt on Stang .........
Well ... it is gonna give very little if any gain in power

To get a real noticeable power gain with a catback

The change would have to be really radical
like
A Stang with well over 300 moving from OEM to high performance CB

Now ... If you got some long term plans that include mucho power

I'd be concerned about what you are doing at this time
but
If you just wanna do something that sounds better

Weld in some muffs that you think would make you happy

better yet

Copy from another Stanger who has got something that sounds good

More simply put

A complete CB or just welding in some muffs

One or the other ........
ain't gonna make enough difference ... power wise ... to matter

I'd say no. You might be able to tell if both are dumped.

2.5" vs. 3" seemed to bring on a different tone....

but nothing earth shattering. Just minor differences...
