price = outrageous.

The only benefit you get is a WOW factor. A few others are making the attempt on this board. Personally, I dont think its worth it. You can build a 302 or a stroker to make the same power as a DOHC engine

unless you plan to really mod the Cobra motor you may consider a +99 2V modular also. I beat 4V's OK n/a running 13.45 in the 1/4. May save a buck or 2 Probably is not hard to do at all if you get the computer, and all the wiring harnesses.

The Modular engines are W I D E and will probably require removal of the shock towers, and use of coil overs. It been done here do a search.

Just DO NOT get a pre 99 2V modular. You want the PI 2V from a +99. (performance increased) or something like that.

The 4.6L (SOHC or DOHC) won't fit between the towers on a 66...(edit: just noticed 68&00 GTs post... maybe it will with the SOHC, but i haven't read that link...). If you were planning on axing them anyway and using a Mustang II type front suspension, then yes it would fit. But it will be pricey. In addition to the wow advantage, theres a chance that, at any given power level, a blown 4.6 (DOHC especially) might be more streetable and perhaps get better mileage than a pushrod based ford. But you're probably talking at least 5 times as much to build it, and its heavier to boot. I wouldn't bother.

in order to get even the sohc motor to fit, you need to make enough room to fit a 460, and you cannot do that in a 65-66 mustang. you will have to change out the front suspension to a mustang ll and eliminate the shock towers. the next thing you need to tackle is the electronics, you can use the stock late model mustang wiring harness, but you will have to add everything the late model mustang came with, including the abs brakes, and the emission controls, etc. there are things you can eliminate, but you may end up getting a check engine light coming on, on a regular basis as the computer will be looking for certain responses from certain things. that means 4 O2 sensors in the proper locations. as for not using the 98 and earlier engines, bravo sierra. use them if you like, just swap on the newer pi heads and intake, or use the frt heads and intake. the best block to get is the 93-98 lincoln mark Vlll or the 96-98 cobra block(they will handle 1500hp out of the box). also if you plan on modding the engine get the book "how to build max performance 4.6 ford engines" by sean hyland. it is packed with excellent info you wont see anywhere else. he even give his recipe for building a 405hp(naturally aspirated!) cobra engine.
