i cracked the cap on the 01 and the engine coolant was a color i didnt think that engine coolant could be, so its time to change it. Ive never done this on a newer car, use to opening the petcock and dumping fresh in the radiator cap but this car really dont have a radiator cap, just a cap on the overflow.
whats the correct way to change the coolant on these cars?

I would go buy the kit and and some cleaner and do a complete flush. Or just save the hassle and mess and take it to a shop to do. It's pretty cheap. Usually $69-89.

Pull the thermostat out. Put the housing back on. Disconnect the upper & lower hoses. Shove a garden hose into the upper hose and turn on the water. When the water coming out of the lower hose is as clean as it was going in then shut the water off. Let it drain completely. Put a new thermostat in, fill the system up, and burp it.

The best guide I have found online is this one:

BULLITT Flushing the Cooling System

No need to pull off radiator hoses or take off thermostats.
