charging sys probs

hey guys, um i put my car on a DMM and found i'm only getting 12.36-12.47V. Now, my main alt. harness has the two large black wires spliced and connected to one large red 10g wire...i'm guessing this half-ass crap would be causing it? The alternator, batt, and solenoid are brand new by the way.

well is it a stock replacement alt for a 92?? i'm assuming this is the car in your sig??

ok i asked because alot of people upgrade the stock alternotrs to the larger 130(3g or 3rd generation) alternators because the stock ones (2g or 2nd generation) are not high amp alternators and if you have alot of electronics (big stereo, electric fan, etc) the older 2g's don;t work right...whichis why i asked, and yes it sounds like you may have some kind of weird set up with your power wire ( which is what those two black/orange stripe wires are)

ok assuming it's the original 2g type alt, you should have a black plug that plugs into the alt ( actually there's 2) and the one black plug is the one the black/orange wires, and a white wire go too. where's this red wire spliced in?

Was that voltage attained with the car off? If so, it is ok.

I would look for 12.6 volts or so with the car off. Look for more than 12.6 volts with the car idling with no load (should be 13-14.5 volts).

You can check voltage drop for primary powercharge cables. Test the voltage at the positive battery terminal, vs the voltage at the battery lug on the solenoid, vs the alternator.

The rule of thumb is to not see more than .5 volts drop from the alt to the battery terminal (e.g. if the alt reads 13.6 volts, the battery should show at least 13.1 volts). Personally, I wont accept more than .2 volts drop.

That is where I might start. Should take 30 seconds to do the testing.

Good luck.
