IMO, If you're looking to install a new cam, you might as well buy something better than an E cam. Just my 2 cents.

Like what, Im changing the timing chain and I figured it'd be a good time to do something mild and cheap. The car only has full exhaust, but will probably get more and more stuff over (a long) time.

Yea, if you are going to spend money....might as well get a better cam. The Ford Racing cams are good, but there are a lot out there that are much better. From my experience, I think the E cam is kind of the worst of both worlds. It has a bad idle, yet it doesn't make power in the higher RPMs. It's a good cam if you are running stock valves and springs, because any cam that makes power above 6k isn't going to be good for stock springs anyway.

I have an E cam, but it was free....and I am running stock springs. When I do my next head swap, I am changing cams because I am sick of the car dying off at 55k.

if you have stock heads and such i wouldnt even mess with it.

if you do plan on heads and stuff in the future you're going to have to tear it all back down and it wont be any harder to swap cams then that it would be now.

It's not that I'm a abcdefg cam hater, IMO there are so many better cams out there. Comp, TF, just to name a few. I figure if you're going to go through the trouble of putting in a new cam, get a more radical cam that you see better numbers from.

Why exactly are you changing the timing chain?
An E cam is good for a vehicle that needs to meet emissions standards.
With stock heads, almost no cam is going to help you all that much, sometimes if any.
And just beacuse the cam is mild doesn't mean your springs aren't shot enough that it won't float valves.

85k on the engine, changing the timing chain because its pretty slack and convenient while we're changing the front end gaskets.

like the others have said, if you are running the stock heads and intake...there is absolutely no point to putting in a cam. Ask everyone on here that has a cam on a stock headed car and they will tell you what a dog the car becomes in the lower rpms. Even in my combo...my car is a gutless pig below 2k rpm. The stock cam is a torquey SOB and works very well with the stock heads/intake. I would suggest not changing it until you have the money to do the heads. And at that point your best bet is to spend the $$ for a top end kit that comes with everything, matched and ready to go. Good luck man

I decided to go with the popular consensus and hold out for a cam despite the convenience with the timing chain off. With some sort of problem with the brakes on this car I think Im gonna start building up a 5 lug swap

Well, I wouldn't put it on hold. You already have it out. Why not throw a TFS stage 1 in there. That way, it's waiting for when you put the rest on there, and it'll sound good in the mean time. Everything you lost will motivate you to finish the job with heads and an intake.
